Overall Satisfaction with Dropbox

We use Dropbox to store large amounts of shared data, and handle permissions for access to the files. It's a diverse environment with Windows, macOS and Linux clients, as well as some mobile access from outside the office.

Pros

  • Quick setup
  • Good web interface
  • Integrates well with Windows

Cons

  • Linux client is just straight up broken, and has been for years
  • There is no way to request support for the broken Linux client
  • Support on the forum amounted to literally wishing me "good luck"
  • Dropbox filled the disk completely on a Linux device with no warning
  • Dropbox cannot be disabled or switched off once installed on Linux
  • Dropbox cannot be configured on Linux using the tray widget
It works fine on some platforms, but that is not enough. If I am choosing a product that needs to work in a diverse environment, then they need to actually support the clients they claim to support. Claiming support and then having it not work, and no recourse to get it working, makes Dropbox seem like a transparent money-grabbing company and not a serious company that cares about their customers and supports their end clients.
We ended setting up Samba on Alpine Linux and using it to share files amongst users after we were unable to get support from Dropbox, despite paying them huge fees each month for non-existent support of the broken Linux client.

Do you think Dropbox delivers good value for the price?

No

Are you happy with Dropbox's feature set?

No

Did Dropbox live up to sales and marketing promises?

No

Did implementation of Dropbox go as expected?

No

Would you buy Dropbox again?

No

Dropbox is not a mature product if it cannot properly support all of the clients they claim to offer. The Linux client does not work as advertised and has not been maintained for a long time. Dropbox should either drop the claim of supporting Linux platforms or fix their client and support it.
