Overall Satisfaction with Drupal

We used Drupal for our large ecommerce and blog site. We originally went with it because at the time, it was more customizable than WordPress. Or so we were told. We have done many customizations to the checkout interface and product pages. We have had our site on Drupal for over a decade.

Pros

  • Modular design offers customizability
  • Some important functionality built in
  • Community of contributors for add-on modules

Cons

  • In our experience, the upgrade process is horrendous or nonexistent
  • I think the amount of things that need a coder to change is too high
  • In my opinion, it is not user friendly or intuitive
  • I think we have wasted so much money on this site
  • In my experience, Developers need to do extensive work to change anything
  • In our experience, much more expensive and time consuming than WordPress
In my opinion, it's not intuitive. It's not user friendly. There are features that I have to use once ever several months, and I literally had to write it down how to find it because even though I have decades of experience working on the backend of websites, I could not find what I was looking for. Even though I've used the feature again and again.
I think WordPress beats Drupal in every possible way. The upgrades to newer versions are almost trivial, unlike Drupal which, in our experience, requires hundreds or thousands of hours of work and untold sums of money simply to go from one version to the next! In my opinion, it's complete insanity that we have to put up with this when WordPress has made it so effortless to upgrade.

Do you think Drupal delivers good value for the price?

No

Are you happy with Drupal's feature set?

No

Did Drupal live up to sales and marketing promises?

No

Did implementation of Drupal go as expected?

No

Would you buy Drupal again?

No

I say, if you hate WordPress and other options, then using Drupal might be for you. Otherwise, I think WordPress beats Drupal in every way hands down. We've used WordPress for all our other sites after the ONE Drupal site, and we're looking to move off it on that one last site as well.
