Overall Satisfaction with Harvest

My whole company uses Harvest as our time tracking tool. We track both internal tasks as well as tasks within each department for our clients. It works in conjunction with Basecamp that we use as our project management system to easily log time on what client and task we're currently working on.

Pros

  • Ease of use - Especially once a project in Harvest is setup, it's easy to duplicate the project from month to month
  • Multiple ways to track time - Our team uses Harvest in different ways, and it's easy to use for everyone's style. Some people run their timer constantly and switch when they change tasks, and some add all of their time at the end of the day.
  • Graphs - A simple color-coded line graph shows for each client and project so with a quick look at the screen we can tell which clients are under and over budget.
  • Reminders - The system reminds users if they've left a timer running overnight or all weekend, both with an email and a message within the system.

Cons

  • Reporting - the reports could be a little more intuitive and easy to set up
  • Permission level - lots of team members accidentally put a "project manager" check next to a contractor on specific projects that upgrades their level on the whole site vs just that one project. It would be nice to be able to lock that in the settings.
  • Harvest hasn't affected the business ROI, just made time tracking easier.
Harvest is great for tracking time across numerous employees that work on numerous projects, and need to be kept track of what piece each of the employees does separately from each other. It would be overkill if just one employee works on a project, or there's not very many projects or tasks that are worked on.
