Overall Satisfaction with Matillion

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use our own AWS instance to run Matillion ETL, and it has made our lives infinitely easier. Bringing in new data is a breeze, as well as setting up increasingly complex data pipeline tasks. From our oldest SQL servers long overdue to be retired to the latest APIs, it takes minutes to stage new data, and it makes tricky problems easy. Hard to imagine a world where we didn't have Matillion.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Import data from anywhere -- tons of built-in components to bring data from nearly any source.
Ease of creating complex procedures to stage data and run pipelines.
Seamless integration with Snowflake.
Solid documentation and support.

Cons

Matillion is brilliant at importing data -- it would be amazing to have more ways to export data, from emailed exports to API pushes.
Any Python that takes more than a few lines of code requires an external server to run it. It would be great to have more integration (perhaps in a connected virtual environment) to easily integrate customized code.
Troubleshooting server logs requires quite a bit of technical expertise. More human readable detailed error handling would be greatly appreciated.

Return on Investment

Time savings -- we could custom code nearly everything Matillion does, but it would take days/weeks instead of minutes/hours.
There's a bit of a learning curve to truly unlock Matillion's potential, and that can be frustrating for some new users, but once you get over that curve, the possibilities are endless.
It allows us to centralize the hundreds of way to bring data in, so that even if you have to troubleshoot what someone else wrote, it's easy to jump in and understand what is happening.

Usability

For basic orchestration tasks, folks can jump in quickly and build basic jobs, which is incredibly valuable. Matillion really starts to sing when you become a "power user," so I'm knocking of a point for that curve, but it's time well worth taking.

Time to Value

Very fast -- when our warehouse started, we were able to set up our initial staging loads in just a couple of days.

Scalability

Scaling has been pretty easy, but as an AWS EC2 user, we have pushed the limits of our instance sizing a couple of times and had to do an upgrade. Having an ability to filter server logs now that we have jobs running nearly constantly would also be useful. But even with these bumps, Matillion has been able to successfully scale with us as we grow.

Alternatives Considered

n/a -- joined the team after they already were established in Matillion. Have had brief looks at other ETL products but found nothing compelling enough to suggest a change.

Likelihood to Recommend

When my team receives a request to import data in from a new place, it's great to have a tool where you can set up those imports in minutes, yet have the capabilities to create customized and complex orchestration as time allows.

Because it's easy to send SFTP exports, my internal customers are sometimes surprised that it's not as easy to perform other exports such as e-mailed files or API integrations. If Matillion had output components as varied and excellent as the import components, it would be the perfect solution for so many things we do.
