A Great On-Premises ChatOps Alternative

Overall Satisfaction with Mattermost
Mattermost is being used primarily in the software development community within our organization, although it is open for use for all employees. Using Mattermost has allowed for easier collaboration for those working together on projects, by limiting use of email, sharing knowledge, and getting quicker responses. With Mattermost implemented in our organization, tickets have drastically reduced due to a support person being able to answer questions directly on the platform.
- Persistent chat capability, being able to search previous conversations.
- The search function itself, finding conversations, files, people, etc.
- Intuitive design, users can easily adapt to Mattermost due to its simplicity in design and features.
- Audio/Video capability, implementation could be better (such as what current competitors have)
- Customization could be better, with more options, such as theme, layout, and notifications
- Some users have trouble with distinguishing between Teams and Channels, and are unsure of hierarchy or how to organize.
- It has reduced ticket quantity by a vast percentage, which has reduced costs due to less call being placed to the help desk
- It has reduced email flow as well, which requires less management by Mail Administrators
- It has made software developers within the organization very happy, as most of them are now ambassadors for Mattermost
- Microsoft Teams and Slack
Compared to Microsoft Teams, Mattermost lacks the integration with the popular Microsoft Office Suite, and lacks features such as audio/video capability. Teams excels at this, and has an advantage, as Microsoft has all those features working well in-house.
Compared to Slack, Mattermost is very similar in design and use. The difference is that Mattermost can be deployed on-premises, within your own organization's datacenters, whereas Slack is hosted on the cloud. Our organization, for this reason, chose to deploy Mattermost, so that we can have more control over data and have more security measures in place.
