Overall Satisfaction with Oracle Database 12c

My organization is a consulting company, specialized also on Oracle products, among which Oracle Database, and 12c is the last stable version recently released by Oracle. We propose this database to our customers, that are typically multinational corporations, and then create models for business intelligence and processes management. Oracle Database has always been the perfect tool to store huge quantities of data, with the purpose of analyzing them. So, the business problems that it addresses are related to creating a place where company data are collected and can be accessed by the company employees from all over the world. In my opinion, the 12c version is so far the best release of Oracle Database.
  • New adaptive query optimization functionality in this release
  • Improved the security of data, through transparent data encryption and data redaction
  • Improved real-time performances through in-memory technology, able to manage also OLTP workload
  • Improved some Oracle functions (from version 12c release 2)
  • Added the possibility to automate compression and storage tiering policies, according to the usage of the data
  • Oracle Enterprise Manager, that goes with the database, has been improved as well as a tool for DBAs
  • License costs for Oracle Database are pretty high and not affordable at all for some companies
  • Installation and maintenance of the database is quite difficult (not specifically in this release)
  • Data querying is very fast, thanks to query plan optimization
  • Data is securely stored inside the database
  • Fault are well managed thanks to Oracle's RAC environment, allowing data to be always available
Even if is quite expensive, Oracle Database 12c is way better than most of its competitors thanks to Oracle experience and skills on database technologies. Oracle Database has always guaranteed the best data recovery and fault management policies, thanks to Oracle's RAC environment. Oracle Database also guarantees reliability, scalability, and inter-connectivity with existing applications (belonging to Oracle suite or not).
For multinational corporations it is really important to have a stable and always accessible environment, since they work at every time zone, as well as a good level of performance in getting answers to queries, and most of Oracle's competitors can't pledge these features, especially open source ones like PostgreSQL.
Oracle Database 12c is for sure well suited for multinational corporations which want to create a warehouse to store all of their business data and analyze them with reporting tools. It is not really appropriate for smaller companies, because it can be really expensive, both in terms of license and maintenance, and, if the quantity of data produced by the organization is not high enough, may not be worth it. Moreover it may be less appropriate also for storing "big data", especially when compared to other more specialized technologies.
