Overall Satisfaction with Parallels Remote Application Server (Parallels RAS)

Reducing the number of licenses required for various applications.

Teams that span multiple continents dont use the same license simultaneously and Parallels Remote Application Server (Parallels RAS) reduces such costs drasticlly.

Pros

  • Manage multiple product licenses
  • Roll out additional servers very easily (for capacity)
  • End user interface friendliness

Cons

  • Connection interface could be simpler or a way to hide/skip it (Some non-IT staff don't need to see or known any of the connection details)
  • A way to kill old sessions/open apps, with active directory specifically there's issues with some sub-windows sometime staying open and creating multiple active sessions. (Logging out/disconnecting does not always resolve the issue)
  • In a smaller organization license costs for 3D software design can be extremely costly and optimizing the usage is key. In our scenario the cost of Parallels Remote Application Server (Parallels RAS) themselves and license costs didin't reduce costs at all as the cost of Parallels Remote Application Server (Parallels RAS) itself took all the savings we were making, but in saying that the following were the pros of that move
  • Pro:
  • - It gave us the ability create profiles for various teams and limit the access they have on the local machines (Improving security)
  • - We were able to reduce hardware costs as employees no longer needed machines with powerful GPUs (they were all on the server)
  • Con:
  • - It added IT overhead to manage Parallels Remote Application Server (Parallels RAS) itself (as its still an additional tool to manage)
It's well made/suited for IT staff but using it for non-IT staff is problematic due to the GUI and connection pages
It took between 1 to 3 months to fully set-up most of our applications, train the team on how to add/remove/maintain applications on Parallels Remote Application Server (Parallels RAS).

Even then we found a problem with capacity which took close to 6 months to purchase and set-up the additional Parallels Remote Application Server (Parallels RAS) nodes to accomodate our needs
Parallels Remote Application Server (Parallels RAS) provided the most cost effective option for virtualizing applications.
