Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We have a small shop and only need a handful of VMs. Scale Computing Platform is cost effective and very easy to manage. Our 3 person IT staff is able to pretty much set and forget it. Updates are very simple to perform and non-disruptive to production, and support is great. They are fast and courteous. I have nothing but good things to say about my experience with our Scale Computing Platform implementation.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Simplicity. Scale Computing Platform is super easy to implement. The hyperconverged hardware is ready to go out of the box
Reliable. The hardware is rock solid and redundant
Easy to Manage. Simple web interface, easy updates that can be done during production without any interruptions.

Cons

Scale Computing Platform might be a little too simplistic in some areas, such as networking.

Support Rating

I've only contacted support for minor questions, but they have always been very helpful and fast.

Return on Investment

Quick installation without engaging a partner. We had the system up and running within a couple of hours.
Simple management. We don't have to dedicate a lot of time for day to day management of the cluster, it just works.
We can keep the cluster up to date without costly down time.

Alternatives Considered

I'm fairly well versed in traditional VMWare installations on a variety of hardware, and even HP's first attempts at hyperconverged infrastructure. Scale Computing Platform is much easier to implement than any of those. 3 1U machines, no external storage, no SAN switch to configure. Just rack, stack, and go.

Likelihood to Recommend

For small to medium IT teams, Scale Computing Platform is amazing. You can get up and running in no time. Things just work. Support is fantastic. Management is simple. I have no doubt that you can scale to larger enterprise environments as well, but there might be some management concerns at large scale. Coming from VMWare, Scale Computing Platform is different, so there is a learning curve. It's not very steep, it just requires some getting used to. Once you understand the concepts, it's all very logical.
