Overall Satisfaction with ScienceLogic SL1

I am not involved in actual implementation, therefore I cannot comment on it.
We are currently adopting ScienceLogic SL1 as our tool for monitoring network infrastructure (branch and data center routers and switches, firewalls, load balancers, proxies). Its role is - to detect events and create SNOW tickets for the support team for defined events. - to gather data by SNMP polling and provide graphs of this data to network support staff
On-Premise Only
  • it is able to collect data via SNMP
  • it is able to graph them
  • it is able to receive Syslog messages from devices and create events from them based on defined rules
  • I'm not sure whether it is doing above things particularly well but it does them fine
  • from my experience so far, customization options are really poor - although you can write your own scripts in several places, their interaction with ScienceLogic SL1 back-end is hard to debug and appears to be reliant on undocumented proprietary python libraries
  • options to integrate with other software suffer from the same points as mentioned above
  • In my experience, UX/UI has been quite unpleasant for me and my colleagues

Do you think ScienceLogic SL1 delivers good value for the price?

Not sure

Are you happy with ScienceLogic SL1's feature set?

No

Did ScienceLogic SL1 live up to sales and marketing promises?

I wasn't involved with the selection/purchase process

Did implementation of ScienceLogic SL1 go as expected?

I wasn't involved with the implementation phase

Would you buy ScienceLogic SL1 again?

No

  • we are still in the process of implementation
  • after all of our production devices are onboarded to SL1, we will be able to bring network monitoring in-house instead of it being outsourced as it is now
  • I am Engineer/SL1 user only, therefore I cannot comment on ROI or similar numbers
Although NetBrain is not a monitoring tool, we use it a lot and there are some overlaps in terms of being able to quickly gather information about network devices and topologies.

NetBrain maps are superior to SL1 maps.
NetBrain customization capabilities are superior to SL1.
SL1 device performance data gathering capabilities are superior to NetBrain.
First of all, I must say that I am not sure what the market for monitoring solutions look like, I haven't compared SL1 to other similar product. I wasn't part of the team who made the decision of adopting it. That being said, I would prefer a more "open" solution that does its job but is easily customized and integrated with other software. To that end, I would expect - straightforward programmability - thorough and clear documentation I hoped to find the above capabilities in SL1 but so far in my experience I haven't, therefore if I was asked for a recommendation, I would suggest a colleague do some research on similar products before deciding to go with SL1.
