Overall Satisfaction with Skype for Business (formerly Lync)
We have been using Skype for Business across our entire company for instant messaging and simple video calling between our users. Most of our users are okay with the product, but as we introduced other platforms with chat capabilities, it became more apparent how Skype for Business was lacking for full integration and compatibility with other services such as Office 365.
- Sending text messages to other users.
- Sending files between users.
- Simple video meetings between users.
- Logging in with SSO when you have a mixed Exchange and Office 365 environment.
- If something goes wrong with the product, troubleshooting can be difficult.
- No easy, direct way to fully uninstall the product. In our instance, it's linked to the Office suite, so if we want to remove it, we have to uninstall the entirety of MS Office.
- It has allowed our users to more quickly work with each other vs waiting on emails or other forms of communication.
- IT support required more time because of the choice to integrate it so tightly in most Office suite installations.
- For our installation, it required extra servers to facilitate the service.
- Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Slack
We're working to transition away from Skype for Business and onto one of the alternatives. Working with Skype for Business, many of the features feel "last-gen" and while it's not terrible and it gets the job done, the alternatives have more team collaboration utilities and integrations built in that make it an overall better fit for the problems that Skype for Business sets out to solve.
