Overall Satisfaction with Skype for Business (formerly Lync)
Skype for Business was heavily used by my organization until Teams reached (mostly) feature parity. We still have some users that haven't completed the migration to Teams - this will be complete by the end of the month as Skype for Business Online is being phase[d] out for Microsoft Teams effective July 31, 2021. It is impossible to recommend a product that is going end of life in less than two months.
- Included with most Microsoft 365 packages.
- Integrates with Outlook and other Microsoft apps.
- Integration with Skype (consumer) is terrible.
- Interface is very old - not intuitive.
- Doesn't support advanced call handling like Teams.
- Skype for Business was included with our Office 365 subscription - it fit the need before people started collaborating more online.
- Doesn't support rooms - only person to person discussion - doesn't keep up with how people work today.
- Microsoft Teams, Zoom and RingCentral
Today it's impossible to recommend Skype for Business for any new customer. Online is end of life at the end of July and on-prem slowly loses support over the next few years. Switch to either Teams (Same license) or another product. In reviewing other products we chose Teams because it was included with our Microsoft Licensing and met all of our requirements.
Zoom and Ring Central are both products I would recommend over Skype for Business. If you want to have the same functionality as you had before with Skype, upgrade your environment to Teams and enjoy the new features.
