Overall Satisfaction with Ubiquiti Networks UniFi
We use Ubiquiti Networks UniFi for our public/open wireless network. Per contract, employees need to have access to the Internet for personal use while on breaks or off-hours, but this can create a security issue if it's tied to our internal network. So we use Ubiquiti Networks UniFi as a separate network, connected to its own ISP, for employees and clients and vendors who visit, without compromising security.
Pros
- Wireless connectivity
- Ease of management
- Easy setup
- Data reporting
- Price
Cons
- Filtering is not very robust
- Setting up any kind of routing can be difficult
- Other advanced networking features (e.g., VLANs) could be implemented better
- Ubiquiti Networks UniFi lacks any kind of real support outside of posting on their forums
- Inexpensive: For a few hundred dollars, we were able to set up a guest WiFi network that covers our entire building.
- Secure: Because of the ease of setup, we were able to set this up completely separate from our work network, which saved money and time on configuring our other network infrastructure for public WiFi.
- Management: Although we don't monitor the traffic that much, it is an easy thing to do, and we can use these reports to show management how often employees are online and using bandwidth.
Cisco is far more enterprise-level, and if your network is already all Cisco, it ties in well. Of course, that means it's as complex as Cisco gear usually is--each feature comes with more to know and understand, whereas the simplicity of Ubiquiti Networks UniFi makes it far easier and more understandable, with the trade-off of some higher level functionality. Cisco also costs a whole lot more, but you do get better support.
