Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup & Replication

In our company we use Veeam Backup & Replication for our standard disaster recovery backups of all our VM's. We are an MSP and we deliver outsourced ICT services to our customers, including backup.
Veeam delivers a total set of backup solutions to manage all the user data that is generated, from VM's to servers in the cloud (Public and Private), you name it, Veeam can back all the important data up for you.
We created desktop and laptops backups with Veeam workstation and are also using Veeam Backup & Replication for Office 365.
  • It creates forever incremental backup by standard, this feature will keep your back-up windows as small as they can be.
  • It supports Nutanix AHV, to us it's very important to have a backup software that makes backup at hypervisor level.
  • Restoring files and object is fairly easy with Veeam, we get various questions about restoring files, also from older restore points, depending on the retention it's always fairly fast and helps users with their ongoing work.
  • Veeam can become slow for restoring when using larger datasets, this means above 2TB data
  • In larger replication environments there are better products available for this feature, but Veeam is closing the gap...
  • Better warning system when removing backup files, so admins get warnings or criticals errors when removing (important) backup files
  • We decide to start with Veeam when our previous backup product was not able to backup the VM's on our Hyper-V cluster, it was up and running within 30 minutes, and all admins could rely on backups running fine every day.
  • Veeam gives the possibility to create (backup) services with their software, this way you grow with your customers and when reaching an amount of points you will get better prices. So it's very easy to setup a Backup as a Service solution which will become very profitable.
  • With the addition of making backups of Nutanix, physical machines and Office 365, we are able to deliver a backup solution from one vendor, that's a big plus.
It is possible to restore directly to a private or public cloud, we as a MSP are able to deliver this service to our customers. Until this point none of our customers do have the need for this feature, so we did not yet fully implemented this service. We did test this scenario and it is a nice addition to our portfolio, especially when customers are opting for a high-available solution.
We have the option to verify all backup data on by standard, this will leave you with working backup files. Regarding compliance we have a statement for GDPR regulation regarding backup files about data which off corse will be in the backup files even when people ask to remove personal data. Our customers can ask us about this.
As an MSP we are working with all kins of data, in a couple of scenario's we are doing upgrade tests for software upgrades or troubleshooting in a sandbox test environment. This way customers can go on with their normal daily work, while we together with software companies are working on solving or testing new updates.
We as an organization can delivers this service to our customers as a (paid) solution.
For some of the products we can say we compare this with Veeam every year, but until today we have no reason to switch over to another product. Veeam is rolled out in our organization and every admin can work with the Veeam products, so there's no need to switch (yet!).
Veeam Backup & Replication performs very well in a Nutanix AHV environment, we use it for making all backups of VM's on the Nutanix clusters. Nutanix and Veeam are also technology partners, in the meantime, Nutanix developed a Nutanix Mine appliance together with Veeam. Offsite backup is also delivered as an optional part of our MSP services, this means customers are able to choose to put a copy of their backups outside the building (e.g. Datacenter, public or private). As a Veeam partner, this is a service we can deliver to our customers because of the business model Veeam delivers to their partners.
We don't use replication with Veeam for disaster recovery (failover), because it seems to be to slow for this scenario in many situations, other than this we are very happy with Veeam.
