Veeam is the industry leader for a reason
Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Data Cloud for Microsoft 365
We use this to back up and protect ourselves from data loss in the event of a cyber incident. We also use it to protect our Exchange setup online in the event of mistakes in administration or in the case of a bad actor. It also is a secondary backup for OneDrive in case users have a mishap.
Pros
- Exchange backup and restore
- OneDrive Backup and restore
- EntraID backup and restore
Cons
- Documentation is sometimes lacking
- Intuitiveness of software is not always apparent.
- Positive in that it supports our board's desire to have our company doing all it can to be secure and backed up
We already used VEEAM as the primary instrument to back up our virtual machines and file and we have been with them for years and very successful with them. SO it was not a stretch to go beyond that and see that while Microsoft has some capabilities in the cloud it does not give the full breadth of needs for backup and restore.
While we have been lucky enough to avoid any malicious attacks at this juncture, we certainly have found ourselves in the accidentally deleted category more than once, as any organization might. Once the data is backed up, it is quite seamless and easy to recover the data without any worry or headache.
We do benefit from this restored flexibility, as we have some jobs that now back up to NAS before trickling to the cloud. This cuts down backup and restore time for immediate needs greatly, while still allowing us to have a wide array of backup points in the cloud for whatever restoration needs are required.
My favorite features for this product are backing up Exchange data and backing up Entra ID data. One of the most common problems is either users deleting items that they did not mean to delete or administrators either updating or deleting records they did not mean to delete. Or in some cases, employees returning a year or two after they left, and not wanting to recreate their record from scratch.
We have looked at Cohesity more recently because we are looking to standardize across all our businesses. We had gone with Veeam prior to this, and I don't know where we will end up, but between the two platforms, I personally prefer Veeam for its stability, reliability, and ease of use once set up.
