Adobe Captivate

Captivate is a great tool for creating content from scratch intended for use in responsive design. This is one of my go-to tools when this particular scenario exists. Captivate's responsive design option and the wide range of tools make the application an amazing option for mobile design. Despite having a PowerPoint import and conversion option, Captivate is NOT the tool to use when starting with content created in PowerPoint. Slides are imported as a single image, removing animations and any ability to edit the content.

HealthStream

It is very well suited for organizations that have limited resources in terms of education staff. HealthStream can be run by one person if needed. I am doing it for about 20,000 users. Ideally it would work best if you could also build your own courses and have the resources to do that.Key Questions:What training do you provide for administrators? What support do you provide for administrators? What support do you provide for students? How often is the website down? What operating systems are you compatible with? How often do you update your courses?

Pros

Adobe Captivate

  • Adobe Captivate is a full-featured authoring tool, offering users a wide range of interactive and educational tools. Adobe Pro applications excel at providing you most of the options that you want and more than you need.
  • Captivate offers live authoring in responsive design. This feature is essential as we look to develop more content for use across mobile devices.
  • Captivate integrates seamlessly with the other Adobe Creative Suite tools that we use. We combine PhotoShop, Acrobat, and Captivate to create some amazing learning tools.

  • Elective Course Options - dozens of course libaries available for purchase to meeting contining education needs of nurses and clinical employees
  • Class Registraion - Does a really nice job of handling thousands of class registrations for massive education roll outs
  • Course Building - with additional resources you can purchase rights to author your own courses.

Cons

Adobe Captivate

  • Captivate can stagnate and is less user-friendly when it comes to adding animations and certain transitions on your presentation.
  • I found that Captivate wasn't always so user-friendly when it came to using the Demo presentation feature. There were times when I'd have to re-record my steps because for some reason it wasn't accepting certain clicks and/or it would capture things I didn't want it to capture.
  • I found myself getting frustrated a lot when using Captivate because some of the things that I was used to clicking/creating on a different software tool (that was more user-friendly) and the results I was looking for caused me to take extra steps when using Captivate.

HealthStream

  • Very difficult to run any type of report using Healthstream. It would be more beneficial if you could run a report indicating who finished set assignments
  • Very difficult to search for classes. If you do not put in exact titles for particular assignment you will not find it.
  • Cannot print out any listing of upcoming classes on a certain topic or email a list if requested, the product really falls short
  • If an employee is not in Healthstream and you must complete their testing and you must use a "place holder" the product is not very good. If the tester does not go back into the Healthstream record once the individual is registered and enter a learning event then you do not have an accurate transcript.
  • Not really user friendly for all managers, if an older manager is not computer literate. then training can be painful and you will find the product is not used.

We are all in with Adobe products as creative tools, but are leaning more and more on Articulate for course development. It is likely that Captivate will continue to be a tool in our belt even if it isn't our immediate go to

The organization I work with has a different LMS system called Vivid. It is very limited in its capability. We can only select the training modules they have on file. We cannot upload anything we create ourselves. I think that was HealthStream's strength. If I wanted to use what I created, their IT team worked with us to make sure it was implemented/worked properly.

Usability

Adobe Captivate

Adobe Captivate 8.0

Adobe Captivate does take some getting used to. There are features that are much more convoluted than they need to be, but overall it is a great product with a some excellent features. Being in a pretty small market, Adobe Captivate and Articulate Storyline dominate the space. They are not the same software, but allow for eLearning authoring. Each has their benefit and their downside, but, for me, Adobe Captivate edges out Storyline.

Support

The support team is good in responding and maintaining communication. Sometimes...well...almost always, you will find yourself having to use a 2nd attempt with more details and easier terminology to get the tech to understand the question or situation. These techs should know English 100% and their product 100% to be on a support team for the USA. I do not get the impression this is true.

Alternatives Considered

Adobe Captivate

TutorPro's LiveContent leaves a lot to be desired. It is very difficult to use as an assessment tool. It won't record web-based applications correctly and the results are impossible to analyse. StoryBoard was similar to Adobe Captivate, but the LMS integration left us needing more. Camtasia is a linear recording tool with some add quirks that make longer videos very difficult and time consuming to edit. Camtaisa has some very strong tools, though, for video and audio editing, and we keep it around for those needs.

Again, it is user friendly, easier to implement, and fewer errors/IT issues.

Return on Investment

Adobe Captivate

  • One negative aspect of ROI is Adobe Captivate has a steep learning curve.
  • Another negative impact on ROI is Adobe Captivate isn't the least expensive tool on the market.
  • On the positive side, Adobe Captivate has freed up our trainers from tedious classroom tasks.
  • Another positive is that our implementation of Adobe Captivate has resulted in dozens of time-saving training modules, building a library of content used throughout the firm.

HealthStream

  • Increased employee awareness of clinical workplace protocols.
  • Better reputation and acceptance in clinical setting.
  • Better customer service.
