Adobe Captivate

Adobe Captivate can open up the door to eLearning, but it is not quite as intuitive as I would have liked to see. There is a lot of support for Adobe Captivate, but it must be constantly sought out on specific topics. The integration of Adobe Stock and Assets gives Captivate a strong push.

Good for an organization who are in health care and in ABA. Not so good everyone else. There are courses specific to the industry, however, the glitches and the lack of support from the customer service staff makes it hard to recommend the product.

Pros

  • Adobe Captivate records screen shots click-by-click. This allows us to control exactly what steps the users see.
  • Adobe Captivate allows voice-over dubbing. This feature lets us narrate the steps people need to take to learn the products we are covering.
  • Adobe Captivate allows closed captioning. This lets us add voice-over narration, but also allows users to turn off the sound and read the instructions. Many users participate in training from a cubicle where sound travels too broadly to listen to the voice narration.

  • Proving mandatory staff trainings such as blood borne pathogens.
  • Provides uniform board trainings on HIPAA expectations.
  • Provides support to staff who have work deficiencies and may have disciplinary action.

Cons

  • Adobe Captivate has some limitations in how dialog boxes and text frames work. This restricts the creativity of my team.
  • It would be nice to have an automatic voice to text feature to turn the narration into closed captioning.

  • Develop analytics!!!
  • The more interactive, the better the training tool. I also appreciate more ability to customize the leadership modules to better reflect our agency values.

There is no doubt in my mind that we will be using Adobe Captivate for years to come. There are so many uses for the software that we are just scratching the surface. The more we use it, the better it gets. This is a great option for anyone looking for an eLearning authoring tool.

RMLS have become an important component of our agency's support systems. It provides consistent context for education and trainings as well as being flexible to allow staff to access it on their time. We have found many of the content sessions to be very useful for staff development and supportive of our overall agency goals and strategies.

Usability

Adobe Captivate does take some getting used to. There are features that are much more convoluted than they need to be, but overall it is a great product with a some excellent features. Being in a pretty small market, Adobe Captivate and Articulate Storyline dominate the space. They are not the same software, but allow for eLearning authoring. Each has their benefit and their downside, but, for me, Adobe Captivate edges out Storyline.

The support team is good in responding and maintaining communication. Sometimes...well...almost always, you will find yourself having to use a 2nd attempt with more details and easier terminology to get the tech to understand the question or situation. These techs should know English 100% and their product 100% to be on a support team for the USA. I do not get the impression this is true.

It was very easy to implement. It's cloud based, so the most difficult part was getting users loaded.

Alternatives Considered

Captivate is more full-featured than Snagit (which is the most limited), Adobe Presenter Video Express (which is probably the next most limited), or Camtasia (which is probably the most direct competitor that I'm at all familiar with). While I have a limited familiarity with Camtasia (and actually do have access to it because it was bundled into another e-learning authoring tool that I have, Lectora), everything I've seen and read seem to indicate that it's more limited than Captivate. As to why I selected Captivate....my company is basically an Adobe "shop" -- unless there's something that an Adobe product can't do (or can't do well enough), we're heavily discouraged (or, in some cases, simply not allowed) to purchase a competing product.

Not applicable as RLMS was our first and only choice.

Return on Investment

  • I believe that it's had a generally positive effect, but that's mostly based on anecdotal info, "Level 1" evaluation, and some non-quantitative "Level 3" information from supervisors/managers, as we don't generally do "Level 4" or "Level 5" measurement of our e-courses.

  • Positive impact in terms of a staff resource/tool for rolling out new policies or procedures.
  • Positive impact for providing ease of access, consistency of content, recording of trainings/sessions completed and supporting staff development.
  • Perhaps RLMS could develop an analytics sessions specific to population health management and general health care services. These are important components of an integrative system of care and often hardest to communicate the value to folks highly trained just in behavioral health.
