Ahrefs Site Explorer is extremely suitable for any kind of backlink or content analysis in which one wants to get a comprehensive overview of what a website's backlink profile looks like or what a website's top content is. I wouldn't necessarily recommend Ahrefs Site Explorer for keyword tracking because I think there are more efficient tools for that

RavenTools

I would definitely recommend RavenTools to a colleague. They are very open to feedback regarding additional features we would like to see. Additionally, they are great at providing webinars on how to best use their products. We have increased our utilization of RavenTools every time we have watched on of the webinars. These reports are most useful to presenting data to non-analysts. A hard-cord analytics person might want to dig deeper into the data. RavenTools is best at providing a high-level overview of the information. With that said, I think Raven is an excellent reporting solution.

Pros

  • Backlink reports detail gains and losses, which is particularly useful if you're trying to remove bad backlinks.
  • It reviews on-page elements and helps identify how a page could be improved (such as load time.)
  • The tracking capabilities let us see historical data about how website rankings have improved or declined.

  • The interface is simple and user-friendly.
  • The reports are intuitive and easy to create.
  • Summary screens make quick-views each morning a breeze.

Cons

  • With the data they provide they could provide better learning opportunities on how to ACQUIRE links. The blog they have is good but with the insight they provide they could be world class.
  • Outside of their core tools everything else is just ok. The new positions explorer seems like a SEM clone but is pretty bad. If you compare the data it provides to Search Console you'll see it's unreliable at best.
  • Not the best trust metrics.

  • The reports are very amateurish. The graphs are too big and the size can't be changed. Even with the customization they offer (adding your logo) the reports are too basic looking to present to clients. They are also all in black and white, which is a huge issue for us. They're just not impressive enough to show clients.
  • The keyword ranking system is difficult to understand because they use a different method than some other search ranking monitoring services that are on the market. They aren't very good at explaining the discrepancies between their software and their competitors'.
  • Customizing the reports is too time consuming.

Ahrefs recently became more expensive. While they offer a large web index of backlinks, some of the modules of analysis available in similar tools make them a better value in many respects. Ahrefs continues to update their interface, but the accuracy of link counts and new/lost data modules calls into question the validity of the provided information.

I don't plan on going back to the in-house world so there is just absolutely no chance I would ever purchase Raven for my current role, or for a role similar to it. I spend 90% of my time here deep-diving into a single domain, and my boss doesn't care about how my reports look. There is just no use for Raven for me.Now, if I did somehow find myself as the head of an SEO agency providing light-touch services to a wide variety of clients again, I'd certainly reevaluate it along with other similar tools. I just don't see that happening, however.

Usability

Ahrefs7.0

Ahrefs is very easy to use - you can jump right in and understand most of the assets. Overall, the dashboard snapshots give a very good picture of inbound link activity. For deeper analysis of historical trends, the system can become cumbersome, making it hard to do full work without exporting and reformatting the data.

Certain areas, Social Media scheduling, could stand to undergo a complete overhaul. However, most of the RavenTools interface is easy to use. You will not have any issues getting up and running and should there be an issue, the customer service is really good. They also continue to preform updates that make the usability even better

RavenTools has some of the best Customer Support I have ever received. They are quick to respond and will keep you posted on the progress of your issue. You truly feel as if you are getting customized service. No human is perfect and I have had one situation in which I had to reach out multiple times, but overall I fully trust and approve of their process

Alternatives Considered

We use a suite of tools on my team, but Ahrefs is my daily tool because it has the richest feature-set and the best link index I've found. The crawler is also faster than other tools I've used.

RavenTools is a workable solution for companies with SEO needs but also needing to report on social activity and produce easy reporting. We initially bought it for SEO tracking but then needed to add Moz when RavenTools scrapped their ability to report on keyword rankings. Moz is probably better as a pure SEO tool. Their functionality is much deeper, and their blog is a great resource for SEO and marketing advice

Return on Investment

  • We've taken over 75% of our target keyword SERPs since we began using Ahrefs to track our strategy.

  • Increased efficiency
  • Tunnel vision - puts so many tools in one place that other tools may be overlooked
