Ahrefs

Ahrefs has great prices for the data they provide. As a freelancer, I know there are cheaper options, but they do not provide the backlink data that Ahrefs provides. As an in-house SEO, I believe that Ahrefs is a must for research. If I had one SEO tool, it would be Ahrefs because it has most SEO tools all in its suite.

WordTracker

Do you have a dependable keyword research tool? If you do not, this is a great place to develop a platform for your search. Do you have an SEO strategy in place? If not, WordTracker can help give you ideas for expanding that research through the referral term suggestion tool

Pros

Ahrefs

  • Backlink data: Ahrefs continues to provide the best backlink data in the industry when compared to other tools. Other players are playing catching up, but as a first mover, Ahrefs is ahead of the game by far.
  • Keyword data: Ahrefs provides extremely valuable keyword data. Though I rank them second in this category, the data that they provide is comparable to the first ranked player.
  • Content Explorer: I don't think other industry tools (SEO specific) has a content explorer as useful as Ahrefs. Their content explorer works great for identifying top content and trends for multiple industries.
  • Rank Tracker: This rank tracker is better than the average tracker and Ahrefs provides a large limit for tracked keywords. Though they have moved away from daily updates, the rank tracker is great for bench marking progress.

WordTracker

  • Over the years I have learned that WordTracker's KEI is particularly good at revealing a keyword's relative value.
  • WordTracker finds related search terms which helps us develop a more comprehensive keyword strategy.
  • WordTracker also enables practical sorting across columns which helps us select competitive keywords quickly.
  • We use WordTracker frequently in our first phases of keyword research and have found it to be very solid.
  • This tool provides us with data to support our recommendations for changes that may need to be made to be successful in the SERPs and is also helpful in explaining our overall strategy to our clients.

Cons

Ahrefs

  • Can't export graphs: some graphs within the tool would be useful as an export. Unfortunately, exporting them is not an option.
  • No "blanket" reporting options: though Ahrefs is excellent for gathering and exporting intel/data, there are no blanket SEO reports provided. Exporting data is great, but simple report exporting would make it better.

WordTracker

  • A more detailed walk-through for first time users which gives usage scenarios for the different features would probably get people up and running in WordTrack a lot quicker
  • For novice users it might be useful to have WordTracker point out the keywords that would be good to focus on based on the KEI. Something like highlighting the useful keywords in green and the highly competitive ones in red.
  • Maybe a quick intro video for new users. We help clients get up and running in WordTracker and a quick video demonstrating the usage and how it is beneficial might help.

Their index is too vast to ignore when looking at a complete backlink profile. We find links in Ahrefs that do not appear in any other link detection tool. For this reason, it's a must for our agency to use for the foreseeable future. Plus, it's very affordable considering the data you get

Usability

Ahrefs is very easy to use - you can jump right in and understand most of the assets. Overall, the dashboard snapshots give a very good picture of inbound link activity. For deeper analysis of historical trends, the system can become cumbersome, making it hard to do full work without exporting and reformatting the data.

Alternatives Considered

Ahrefs

Betweem Moz, SEMRush, and Ahrefs - Ahrefs takes the cake. Though Moz is catching up with link data, their other toolsets do not provide enough useful data to make complex decisions. SEMRush is a close tie with Ahrefs and would definitely be on top of mind if I also managed PPC. For pure SEOs, Ahrefs would be number one

WordTracker

I only use WordTracker, rather than the old Google keyword research tool. In my experience, WordTracker is the best keyword analysis tool because it's easy to understand, use, and find the information for which you are looking. I also think WordTracker is the most well known and trusted amongst its competitors

Return on Investment

Ahrefs

  • Ahrefs has helped save hours of work because it functions as an all-in-one SEO tool. Before Ahrefs, I would have to switch toolsets multiple times, compile the reports, then organize data. Ahrefs as an all in one helped managed the chaos that having too many tools create.
  • Backlink data is crucial to predicting content success. Ahrefs has provided us with better backlink data, allowing our predictions to be more accurate.
  • Ahrefs has helped us cut away from having another rank tracker subscription. Their rank tracking tool is good enough to not warrant a dedicated rank tracker, helping us save on costs.

WordTracker

  • WordTracker helped come up with strong keywords for Search Ads which increased click throughs
  • Helped maximize the keywords used on client websites and improve the quality of leads coming through
