AWS is a very scalable Platform as a Service (PaaS) -- making it usefull for all sizes. With AWS the failover model can be complicated in terms of selecting the right option for you. Failover within a distribution center is one level, while zone level fail over is a larger one. Be sure to understand your capability needs and discuss with AWS these different choices.

Bluehost

Bluehost is well suited if you would like to keep website management internally and you are looking for a low maintenance, secure and flexible solution. It's also great if you need to manage multiple sites.

Pros

  • The development and administration tools work well, including a consistent API and adequate management console. In terms of business process, it provided an effective "escape valve" for new product development that would have been much more onerous to deploy if we had to provision physical hardware and arrange for associated IT resources.

Cons

  • Standardize service availability across all regions. Not all services are available everywhere.
  • Service limits can be difficult to manage
  • Isolating teams within a shared account is almost impossible due to inconsistent security policies/features.

  • Easier access to domain control and SSL integrations.
  • Better capabilities for WP based sites.

The management console is the weak part of the service in my experience. It is adequate but slow.

Overall Bluehost had a good interface through Cpanel but it wasn't the best for beginner webmasters and those that might need technical support. It was also a little cumbersome to obtain technical support

Performance

AWS does not provide the raw performance that you can get by building your own custom infrastructure. However, it is often the case that the benefits of specialized, high-performance hardware do not necessarily outweigh the significant extra cost and risk. Performance as perceived by the user is very different from raw throughput.

Alternatives Considered

AWS is the industry leader and is far ahead in terms of a feature rich product offering along with worldwide presence

We have used other hosting systems such as HostGator and GoDaddy. We had security problems with GoDaddy and HostGator had performance difficulties. With Bluehost we were able to get a solid, secure hosting service overcome our security and performance concerns. While GoDaddy might offer less expensive services, there would be extra charges down the line that added to our service charges

Return on Investment

  • Some campaigns needed dynamic scaling and setting up a massive infrastructure to meet the demands would have been impossible if it was not for the AWS services that we used. The traffic volume was enormous and AWS did an awesome job within the budgets we had in mind.
