More suited I will say deploying your Web-server, Running some cloud applications, Deploying your micro-services, Managed database. Less suited is really hard to say but there can be some scenario where you can use free services like Google spreadsheet scripting for smaller data management and small workflows. Workflow automation is something you need multiple vendors to talk to each other at that time its preferred to go for something else.

Pantheon

I will be recommending Pantheon as a modern and complete hosting solution provider to ensure the automatic update of their source and improvement of their presence over the internet. It gives noticeably increased performance and ensures excellent uptime. Their support team is very knowledgeable and available 24/7/365 for providing timely support.

Pros

Amazon Web Services

  • What I like in it, is its simple notification service which provides a mobile messaging feature to enable push messaging to my mobile devices as well.
  • It helps in sending out notifications to all my teammates with full integrity.
  • Responsive Support.
  • Offers a variety of features that help to manage my workload.

Pantheon

  • One of the main features that you should highlight about Pantheon is that it allows us to create automated processes. This has allowed us to create posts for our blog and for our website on a scheduled basis, and for them to appear on our site on a specific day and time. In addition, these automated processes save us all the manual work and help our blog always have new and relevant information for our customers. Automation saves a lot of time for us and that is why it is one of the factors that I liked the most.
  • The backup system is very important to us. The Pantheon CDN has allowed us to have a backup for all the actions and publications that we create within this platform, this helps us to be able to restore any previously created backup. In addition, this CDN system has allowed us to solve all kinds of errors, there is no problem if we make a mistake during the publication process, Pantheon will always have the possibility to restore the information.
  • It has an excellent WebOps platform which allows me to have a wide configuration of the performance and capacity of our website.
  • The servers that Pantheon offers us are totally reliable and secure, which can be configured at any time by the program administrator. These servers are so secure that we use them to host our external Drupal sites.

Cons

Amazon Web Services

  • If there is one thing I think AWS needs improvement on, it is the administration dashboard. It can be a nightmare to use especially when trying to access billing. This could be made better, honestly, as there should be a simplified way to access simple admin features.
  • While AWS was fairly easy to integrate into our solutions, it is not as easy to use without some IT knowledge. The dashboards are complicated and designed for someone who is computer savvy. If you are just want to keep track of billing, for example, you may need to take a course or spend a few hours with someone being walked through the admin console.
  • AWS does tend to be slow at times. If you do not have a fast internet connection, it can take time to access services that are hosted on AWS. This is not always the case but we have had clients complain about this if they are trying to access a service from multiple points (IP addresses). The only real fix we found was to make our files cache to another server and only keep current data accessible to clients.

Pantheon

  • The setup and handling process has been a bit complicated for all of us. Although many people participated during this implementation process, it was somewhat difficult to configure the publishing automation configurations and it was also difficult to configure the CDN to protect all our information. People with a lot of training in this area participated in our implementation process, but it was still a bit difficult to have a full implementation. It would be better if Pantheon offers a better implementation process.

We are almost entirely satisfied with the service. In order to move off it, we'd have to build for ourselves many of the services that AWS provides and the cost would be prohibitive. Although there are cost savings and security benefits to returning to the colo facility, we could never afford to do it, and we'd hate to give up the innovation and constant cycle of new features that AWS gives us.

We find it quite easy to use. The only challenge is at the outset figuring out exactly what you need, given the large number of available services and options which could take a bit of time to get familiarised with and to decide on.

Performance

Amazon Web Services

AWS does not provide the raw performance that you can get by building your own custom infrastructure. However, it is often the case that the benefits of specialized, high-performance hardware do not necessarily outweigh the significant extra cost and risk. Performance as perceived by the user is very different from raw throughput.

Amazon Web Services boasts a really quick and helpful support with multiple communication options as well. For instance, on my personal account I incurred a minor charge due to mismanagement of a service. Upon contacting support, they quickly explained the issue to me and upon request waived the bill as a first time error.

Alternatives Considered

Amazon Web Services

Amazon Web Services is well suited when we have a huge amount of data to store, process, manipulate and get meaningful information out of. It is also suitable when we need very fast data retrieval from the database. They provide a superior product at a fair price which allows us to further our goals and push the limits of what we are capable of as a team / company.

Pantheon

A lot of times, we'll inherit existing environments from client projects and will work with them to not disrupt anything. What I like about Pantheon is that it's a fairly simple setup with a lot of power behind it. It can save hours of setup and admin, and is reliable enough that you don't have to dedicate significant project resources to make sure it works on an ongoing basis

Return on Investment

Amazon Web Services

  • AWS has lowered our employee cost, because you don't have to hire Network/Server Admins to manage infrastructure.
  • Increased productivity by incorporating Continuous Integration with AWS and our development life cycle.
  • Increased customer confidence by being able to provide HIPAA level security in our development and production environments

Pantheon

  • We have been able to off-load hosting to a reliable partner so that we can focus on our speciality of web design and development.
  • The dashboard we use gives our teams a birds eye view of the properties we're managing and this has replaced cumbersome spreadsheets for us.
  • The branching system allows for feature development to occur concurrently with smaller improvements, which keeps support clients happy.
