Amazon Web Services

Amazon Web Services is well suited for companies that don't want to have deal with physical infrastructure and want a high level of security and availability. In most cases Amazon Web Services is a great option for most, but may not be an option if you have met the tipping point of physical cost vs. Amazon Web Services cost. It may end up being a better option in the long run to manage the infrastructure yourself if the cost per hour of Amazon Web Services is greater than what you can provide if your level of availability is equal to or greater than Amazon Web Services.

Pantheon

This is a good solution for a small development team who is supporting a site with many users. Many times, a shared hosting service is appropriate for a small business brochure site that gets a few hundred visitors per month, but if your site services user accounts that return or rely on information, this is a good option to rollout new changes and preserve existing data

Pros

  • The development and administration tools work well, including a consistent API and adequate management console. In terms of business process, it provided an effective "escape valve" for new product development that would have been much more onerous to deploy if we had to provision physical hardware and arrange for associated IT resources.

  • The test and development environments are easy to work on without worrying about making production changes.
  • If you make a mistake, it's no big deal. Pantheon has backups of everything and it's easy to restore them.
  • The button to push to production is like magic.

Cons

  • Because we have a large amount of data, constantly uploading and downloading, our monthly fee isn't a set amount, but instead fluctuates up and down each month.

  • Easier payment for site owners.
  • A better form for lead referrals.
  • Tools for non CMS websites.

I would gladly rely on AWS for any large-scale application deployment. For prototyping and small-scale applications, a more heavily managed environment on top of the 'bare metal' virtual infrastructure, such as Heroku or Elastic Bean Stalk, is probably a more productive approach in most cases

The management console is the weak part of the service in my experience. It is adequate but slow.

Performance

AWS does not provide the raw performance that you can get by building your own custom infrastructure. However, it is often the case that the benefits of specialized, high-performance hardware do not necessarily outweigh the significant extra cost and risk. Performance as perceived by the user is very different from raw throughput.

The API's were very well documented and was Janova's main point of entry into the services.

Alternatives Considered

I selected AWS for my development environment and disaster recovery, due to the simplicity compared to other vendors.

We use whatever platform best suits our clients in terms of use-case and pricing, but Pantheon's UI is preferable to our team, and the platform is generally inline with our typical approach of building distributions from an upstream codebase instead of creating and managing a multisite with multiple databases powering individual sites.
