We use it in standard trainings for creators. We also use it for exceptions training where a certain concept is either more difficult for some creators to grasp, or too nascent yet and needs a more focused visual explanation.

Frame.io

By far Frame is the best video review service out there mainly due to how easy it is to introduce to new users, including on the client side. There is not much instruction required in order to share and edit with a client and ask them to start providing feedback - the system is designed to invite users to give notes and that alone is worth the money.

Pros

Animoto

  • Helps any audience Tell Their Story: A handful of still pics can be uploaded, then in just a few clicks you can add music, choose a theme, tweak as needed: done!
  • Visually augments the creative process of defining exactly the message marketing is looking to capture. While words can mean different things to different people, visuals are a very effective communication tool. Animoto lets you test, change, test again and learn so much more about your audience in the process.
  • Our "Who I Am" use of Animoto that drove a higher rate of engagement with our millennial audience that we're challenged with defining the answer to that question.
  • Endless applications in every division: Product Engineering, who want to design their GoToMarket strategy, HR who would use it in a Promotion/Employee Awards program or Training Departments.

Frame.io

  • Frame.io provides an intuitive interface for clients to leave detailed feedback on videos they've hired us to produce. Users can leave public or private comments and start and stop on whichever video frames they choose. Users can draw on a frame using a non-destructive marker to make specific feedback (e.g. I don't like that this window is overexposed and is distracting me from looking at the interview). This allows for making nuanced critiques that are otherwise difficult to convey without using screengrabs or long email threads.
  • Frame.io is easy to learn. If a user is new to the application, the software determines this and a short tutorial video pops up and teaches the new user how to interact with the application. It does this without taking the user to a new page and risk confusing a client. The software is simple to use and I never have issues with uninformed or flustered clients because of it.
  • Frame.io makes sharing simple. Producers can send review links within the application or copy and paste the link into an email, whichever their preference. Users can also create live presentations to walk clients through a video as well. I've not used this feature extensively, so I'm unsure of how well it works, but the option is available.
  • Frame.io interacts with video editing software (i.e. After Effects, Premiere Pro) using a plug-in. Before applications like Frame.io, we had to reference emails with timecodes and then decipher what the client is asking to have changed. It was cryptic, and feels archaic in hindsight. Now, the integration between the application and our software is seamless. I can revisit feedback by clicking on a comment in the review window, and it takes me to the exact point of criticism in the timeline. It's so easy to use and saves so much time.

Cons

Animoto

  • Great visual tool that lets you intelligently communicate what you are seeking to explain to your audience. More features I might suggest would be anything that makes it more interactive with the viewer in real-time.
  • For the price , it is a great deal as is.

Frame.io

  • There have been a couple of times that the review links I have sent have not worked, and it crashed sitewide. I think Frame.io is still working out some kinks, but when I have a tight deadline it's frustrating getting blamed for a broken link when it's Frame.io's website having a meltdown.
  • I would like to be able to export all the timecoded edits directly to my timeline instead of having to reference the website or extension in Premiere. There may already be a way to have this done, but I haven't seen it or it hasn't been properly explained.
  • It's a mild inconvenience to automatically be signed up to get an email for every single edit that has taken place in my video. I know this is a reach, but there isn't much to complain about when it comes to Frame.io. I had to manually go in and opt out of the hundreds of emails I was getting sent for someone just leaving comments on my upload.

I've used other video review systems, Frame was the only one I didn't question how they allowed you to review - I just started reviewing. It's that simple. It's easy to set up projects, invite collaborators, and then provide a final cut for download. It's naturally built for the kind of work that TV/Film & video production companies do.

The few times I have needed support I have received a quick response - though the one major complaint I have had is regarding the omission of an iPad app - supposedly it is in the works but I haven't seen it release yet. We do have issues with the browser being buggy - especially on slow internet. Whether or not that is something support has failed me on, i'm not sure - but they are responsive, but don't always provide immediate results.

We had invested in making our own videos using YouTube, and even Camtasia. But they were still us interpreting on behalf of our audience which took forever. Once we found Animoto, it was so much easier to upload the pics our audience would send us. From there we had a 100% positive response, that we had indeed captured what they were trying to say.

Frame.io

I last used Wipster around 4-5 months ago, but I felt downtrodden by both their business practices and interface. Wipster sprung a new pricing model on users. This pricing model made no sense, was extremely pricey for no reason, and felt like a punch in the gut by a new and greedy company. Furthermore, I had constant issues with the software. It was buggy, slow, and presented issues with clients. My first day with Frame.io was like being released from prison. All I'd known up to this point was disappointment and gloom. Frame.io took every single issue our team had with Wipster and resolved it. Frame.io was nearly perfect

Return on Investment

Animoto

  • Positive as it is so simple to use, and even helps discover where a creative student would benefit far more with a more focused visual.
  • Positive as it is - seriously easy to drop in content and create a video short on any topic, in literally minutes!

Frame.io

  • The turnaround time of getting videos sent out has significantly decreased since using Frame.io. We are able to get our edits from multiple people quicker because there is no need for them to open the video, write down timecodes and write out their edit. It's all in one place. You don't even need to stop the video when you have something to write- it does it for you automatically.
  • The fact that I have all my edits in one place drastically cuts out a ton of time getting changes made to each of my videos. I am able to complete my video quicker, which allows it to release sooner, and I'm on to the next project days before I usually would start it.
