Asigra

If implemented as a Cloud Service provider (Public Cloud), In House Solution (Private Cloud) or a mixture of both (Hybrid Cloud):
  • The Agentless Architecture means there are less support burdens.
  • Encryption at Source gives the customer confidence their data is secure.
  • WAN Optimisation (Compression & Block Level Incremential Forever and De-deupe of Data), enables a large amount of Data to be protected offsite.
  • One step Backup to both Local and Offsite storage enables LAN speed restores with offsite peace of mind.
  • Asigra Replication from DS-System to DS-System enables another geographically separate copy of the data.

Pros

  • Provides capability of local backups while maintaining remote copies on cloud to ensure faster recoveries of recent data and remote protection of all data.
  • Helps reduce cost of long term retention by leveraging the BLM functionality.
  • It does not need specialized hardware for it to work. Customers and Service Providers can choose their own infrastructure and do not need to rely on any OS or storage based replication even for deploying replication of backups.
  • Supports wide range of environments including virtual environments with remarkable features like remote VDR with incremental restores.

  • Veeam is easy to install and manage. However, I recommend getting support personnel Veeam technical training to ensure they are able to deploy to complex environments and tune the software for optimal performance while not impacting production systems.
  • Veeam is dependable in that it provides consistent and reliable backups which are easy to restore. This applies to backup and restore of both physical systems to similar/dissimilar hardware and virtual systems (VMware).
  • Veeam replication features allow for faster recovery of systems which consume a large amount of disk space. Keep in mind disk and network are most often your bottlenecks so you must design accordingly to obtain your target RTO.

Cons

  • We would like to see Asigra come out with a Replication Model for quick Recovery of systems upon Disaster. We can have quicker recovery, DR, with Virtual Machines but we would like to have Physical Machine recovery in less than 2 hours. Replication can accomplish this...
  • We would like to see Geolocation and remote wipe for endpoint devices
  • We would like to see the solution provide easy "roll back" after a disaster.

  • This applies primarily to the manufacturing realm for legacy operating systems are still prevalent. Veeam will only backup physical systems Windows 7, or Server 2008 and newer. In my field we often encounter Windows XP and 2003 systems.

The product is out dated and is missing needed features. The time between product releases is growing longer in a market that has shorter release times.

We really like the product and can't really complain about its performance at this point. We've also had it deployed for years and it would be difficult to migrate to another solution, not to mention hard to justify the cost of a new solution when this one is working as well as it is.

Usability

Easy to use, great scalability, feature packed... Asigra is truly an end-to-end enterprise solution, not simply a point product. Asigra handles backup and restoration of client data across multiple OS platforms- Windows, Linux, Unix, IBM AS400, Mac X, etc... They include servers, desktops, laptops, mobile devices, virtual and physical machines. Some key features to note: Deduplication, Continuous Data Protection, Agentless Backup, Replication (New), Silent mode installation, Best of breed/start of art Security, Storage Discovery/Assessment tools, Autonomic healing... and more.Asigra simplifies Cloud backup, period. Do your clients want a full Public Cloud, Hybrid... what about Private built solution? Asigra handles all, with ease and, with over 26 years of ZERO security breaches.

Overall we have been very pleased with the solution for our virtual infrastructure. I would not give it 10 because I am not really happy with the troubles we get into while backing up our physical servers directly.

Support is very triage based now, for the price it should be full service support and not a cold hand off for a support case.

Online Training

Asigra1.0
Based on 1 answer
Anything training past level 1 and level 2 is a waste of time. They do not offer training, just an exam and require you to read 2500 pages of their documentation as their training. They are selling you something which you already have. Training exams are far fetched and cover topics hidden within the documentation. A lot of their documentation does not match across itself. They don't even follow the standard versions Major.Minor.ServicePack.Hotfix. They use the MAJOR.MAJOR.MAJOR.Hotfix method, which doesn't match their documentation. They require you to take training in order to keep your engaged hybrid partnership. If you ask me personally, their training is a scam to make more money.

Implementation

Quick to install, easy to create jobs, schedules and retention policies. No large cycles of setting up backup volumes or trash volumes. Retention job itself configures the BLM functionality so you don't need an expertise to handle the BLM module separately.

Alternatives Considered

Asigra licensing model is more straight forward than eVault and has an easier user interface.Asigra is more robust and feature rich than Mozy or Carbonite.Asigra offers true multi-tenancy, where the Symantec products do not offer such features.Asigra's feature stack holds water against the other competitors out there. As far as cloud backup goes, it is the most mature cloud backup software on the market. As well as being mature, the security exemplified by the NIST FIPS 140-2 encryption certification is far ahead of its competitors.

Veeam Backup & Replication offers so much more in comparison to other backup software we've used before like Allway Sync or FreeFileSync. Besides backup job scheduling, Veeam can backup entire virtual machines created by VmWare.

Return on Investment

  • Great ROI
  • Stable software
  • Requires almost no maintenance
  • Simple to configure new customers

  • We directly provide backups to customers, so having a reliable and low cost backup solution affects our bottom line directly in a positive way.
  • The ability to have confidence in our backup solution and knowing that in the event of a data loss we would be able to recovery quickly and easily is huge for our business.
  • Since moving to Veeam we have had to spend more engineer hours on management simply do to some extra failures that we wouldn't normally see on our old software. We've determined that it's worth it for the faster ability to recovery from failures, but we continue to look at ways to streamline the management process.
