Authorize.Net

It's great if you need to record billing information for future payments. It's a lot easier than having to send invoices and waiting for the clients to pay every time. Of course, if you're prepaying or something like that, I wouldn't think authorize.net is necessary. Once you get to $10,000/month in credit card transactions, that's when you'd want to look into things like authorize.net from what I understand.

TransferWise

We find the service is excellent, albeit with a couple of caveats. We think TransferWise is best-in-class in what they provide, and we are very pleased they exist. Relying on banks, as we had done before TransferWise, would have been materially more costly due to the higher exchange rates and transfer fees.

Cons

Authorize.Net

  • The lack of data portability is a big issue for me.
  • Authorize.net uses the same $49.00 gateway setup fee to scam merchants out of money, which is no better than any of the other gateways out there.
  • Their customer service is not up to the mark. You can get stuck if you need any help from their end.

TransferWise

  • Volume discounts are only made on each transaction, not monthly values. You are penalized for many small transactions versus single larger ones.
  • Can be unintuitive to understand at first.

We haven't really had to engage with TransferWise support. The platform is simple and easy to use.

Alternatives Considered

Authorize.Net

Authorize.net does not stack up well against Stripe. Stripe is much simpler and easy to maintain. Stripe's recurring payment platform allows the manager to easily associate subscriptions with customers. Where Authorize.net takes about 4 hours to learn, Stripe takes about 1 hour. Stripe also integrates well with other platforms, such as Salesforce, which gives it a leg up over the competition.

TransferWise

We had used bank transfers for several years, but TransferWise outdoes them in almost all aspects. It leaves out most of the bureaucracy, and it is agile and much cheaper. Also, TransferWise reliably sends messages as each step of the transaction is completed. Perhaps TransferWise's main limitation is that it does not support many currencies yet.

Return on Investment

Authorize.Net

  • Lets us charge cards so we can get paid on time, every time.
  • It was very difficult to setup the DocuSign integration the first time, but after we got it setup, it's made the onboarding process very easy. That probably saves about 30 minutes every time we get a new client.

TransferWise

  • Kept us from paying ridiculous fees and not being able to transfer to certain places.
  • Saves time and makes us more efficient by making process seamless.
