Bugzilla

Buzilla is easy to use and provides basic functionality to use as a bug tracking tool. If big size attachments are allowed it would have been great. Also with Bugzilla home->Test management area is improved by allowing multiple sections it would be awesome!

Redmine

Redmine is a perfect solution for businesses that are looking for a FREE and open source solution for project management. It is great for teams that are managing numerous tasks or projects at one time. Redmine is easy to set up and is fairly self-explanatory for anyone who is semi tech-savvy.

Pros

  • Easy to install and maintain. Installation is very easy and hardly needs any maintenance efforts, except when migrating from one version to other. Each project can have its own group of users.
  • Includes all the core features/fields that are needed to log a software bug/issue.
  • Multiple attachments are possible, supports various formats.
  • Good for reporting. Filtering mechanism lets you query bugs by various parameters.

Cons

Bugzilla

  • There should be some sort of association of the multiple affected test cases from the bug which I cannot see.
  • There should be a place for a regression test suite in Bugzilla so that any bug found after every regression suite execution can be termed as regression testing failure result.
  • Documentation is limited to Bugs instead it should more of project-focused and display the health of a project with the bugs being found or resolved.
  • It cannot be part of Agile methodologies as no sprint association can happen.

Redmine

  • The design and user-interface are a little outdated. It looks like a product that was designed ten years ago and doesn't have a polished look and feel like newer apps have.
  • It's not particularly designed to support agile-based project management methodologies such as Scrum.

For future projects I will look at something that is hosted in the cloud that I don't have to manage. I would also like something that has a more modern feel to allow my customers to use it as well as my employees.

This is a pretty straightforward system. You put in the bug details, a ticket is created, the team is notified. The user interface reflects this very simple and straightforward flow. It's certainly much easier than trying to track bugs with using Excel and email.

Redmine is a great product to have in an organization. It's extremely flexible, costs much less to maintain than other alternatives, and as a tool, it is relatively fast to get experienced with. The primary advantages of working with Redmine are: flexible platform, API, open-source and highly configurable, stability.

Since it is open source, it doesn't have customer service. However, the amount of information on forums is vast. If you can wade through it, you'll get what you need

Redmine is free, easy to use and it's everything you could want in a free project management program. The fact that it has wiki integration and that it can track on such a granular level is amazing. Assigning tasks to other users, such as our development team, is fantastic and ensures we are always up-to-date on where we are what - on what projects.

Implementation was pretty simple. Particularly because the product cannot be customized so there is not much to do apart from getting it up and running.

Alternatives Considered

Bugzilla

Compared to other tools, Bugzilla is an affordable bug tracking tool that can be used for logging defects. It's a good, nice and reliable tool, which can be used initially for logging defects. Also, the list and status of the defects can be obtained easily by filtering/querying the fields. The report (along with graph) provides more detailed information about the defects of a project thus helping the management to know about the product quality.

Basecamp was very busy and seemed more into the "wow" factor than into being an efficient tool. Redmine has none of the characters or kid-like appearance of Basecamp's model. I found Basecamp to be too cluttered in views and its interactions confusing, making it difficult to find where centrally kept information was.
Redmine has a straightforward no-nonsense default UI, though you can change it how you like of course. The views were designed for simplicity and thinking of the least amount of steps to get to one goal instead of trying to make a pleasing color palette that was overstimulating. I think Basecamp is more geared towards the "chat" aspect whereas Redmine is good for the larger overview of a project.

Return on Investment

Bugzilla

  • Unification of toolset (one tool for managing software development defects and customer escalations)
  • User appreciation for ease of use in finding interrelated issues amongst different product areas
  • Users continue to express how ugly Bugzilla is, and while skins are readily available, none give a really polished feel to the system.

Redmine

  • Positive: Redmine's initial impact is minimal: in terms of Dollars-the cost of acquisition is the price you pay for Electricity, Internet bandwidth and hardware
  • Redmine's REAL cost is time and knowledge: You will need a Linux expert to implement Redmine.
  • Readmine's configuration is also Time intensive, and it's better to augment your current staff, or hire someone directly to implement your Redmine configuration changes.
