Redmine: an integrated project management tool
Overall Satisfaction with Redmine
It is being used in our group for project management including git repositories, files, documentation, etc. It is very suitable for our projects because one can have everything integrated into the same platform and we can work as a team with distinct levels of access for the different members in different projects.
Pros
- It includes an internal Wiki to explain step by step how to do what we need.
- A very complete project management and team collaboration platform.
- Allows everyone to see all projects and tasks - no assigning to certain people.
Cons
- Some of the dashboard features are tough to figure out.
- Lacks an overview project main indicators dashboard.
- It takes some training time to become an expert on using it.
- It requires some effort for configuration and training, but it's very useful after some short period.
- Redmine does need a lot of data entry, but it's fairly easy to do.
Redmine has a lot of the same functionality but is much easier to use. The project tends to have functions that only the most advanced PM would even look at. JIRA is easier to deploy in a cloud/managed environment: it also has better "apps" support. However, Redmine benefits from maturity, as well as a large base of experts who manage Redmine on a constant basis. Additionally, Redmine is fairly "easy" to set up: as long as you have an appreciable background in Linux/Unix, you can deploy Redmine in a weekend (vanilla, no configurations).
