Cisco Meraki MX

Our Cisco Meraki MX has worked flawlessly since being deployed in our branch offices. We were previously using another vendor in the space and ran into several connection issues and highly monthly costs. The Cisco Meraki MX is well suited for branch offices but should not be considered for large offices with other 100 users.

Midsized business is where I have used it. Have used it to connect to other Untangle boxes across town and in other countries with NO issues and works with MS Domains across these VPN connections. Probably less appropriate for small home networks or large businesses.

Pros

Cisco Meraki MX

  • The appliances are very, very easy to use. You could set one up for basic use with minimal documentation.
  • Intuitive menus in the Meraki Dashboard make traversing your options and finding what you need very easy.
  • Good support options and a healthy knowledge base with well-written guides.

  • Web Filtering is strong, and can also do application fingerprinting to allow Facebook, but not Facebook games. Secondly, a separate partition called a "rack" can be set up to give one subnet or group of users different web filtering policies than another. For example, teachers would get more freedom to browse the web than students at a school.
  • Built-in SD-WAN connectivity as part of your license. IPSEC tunnel creation is also amazingly easy.
  • Will install on any x86 hardware created in the last 5-10 years. Ram and processor requirements per user are very low.
  • Reporting is phenomenal, however you can get death by details very easily.

Cons

Cisco Meraki MX

  • Possible granular access to switchport settings when using VLAN's.
  • Wireless models could and should have advanced wireless functionality which is inherent in the Meraki AP devices.
  • More functionality and customization on the local access pages when device has not connected to the cloud yet.

  • The dashboard could be a little more customizable.
  • I've run into situations where custom reports do not save correctly.
  • It's not always clear where certain configurations are located, but it's still easy to find them quickly.

As we have it in place now, we will continue to keep it at our remote sites. Future expansion is something we are reviewing, and may well start with some of the larger switches as they seem to offer good performance and management at a reasonable price. Wireless is also something we're investing in and their devices are great for that.

The Cisco Meraki MX series is very easy to use. Setting up user VPN access, site to site VPN to tie multiple locations together and managing all your devices. You can even download the latest firmware and install without ever leaving the dashboard. Meraki is the very definition of easy to use

I haven't ever had a bad experience with Meraki support. On the few occasions where I wasn't understanding the UI or needed some clarification about what a setting actually would do, I contacted them and they were very quickly able to provide help. Returns are simple and fast, too. We had to return a defective device one time and they shipped the replacement before we had even un-racked the one that was faulty. Unlike many other vendors, they didn't ask use to a do long list of scripted diagnostics, they just took my word for it that the device was broken and sent out a replacement immediately

Alternatives Considered

Cisco Meraki MX

When comparing the Cisco Meraki line to other products it became nearly an incomparable argument. While Fortinet and SonicWall were very comparable to the Meraki MX series, there were just too many tangible and intangible factors that led to us choosing Meraki. The biggest deciding factor was the cloud management of Cisco products that was that much more reliable compared to the other products. A negative against Meraki though is its yearly licensing costs which are significantly higher than its counterparts.

The Untangle NG Firewall is way more intuitive but the last barracuda I used was almost 8 years ago.

Actually my largest deployment is limited to 50 sites for a customer. I'm actually in a new one with the aim of deploy more than 1000 sites. I also can't give 10 because I don't know how it will work with many sites. But actually we already have more than 300 sites and the administration is still easy.

Return on Investment

Cisco Meraki MX

  • Previously I managed Cisco ASA equipment and enjoyed these firewalls. The need to train other admins and deployment at MSP clients were at the top of my list for switching to Meraki MX. The learning curve is much less steep for new security admins and the central dashboard allows coolabritive efforts when admins are in different locations. Built-in change management makes it easy to see who made specific changes as changes are logged on the dashboard.
  • Other content filtering solutions that I have used had more bells and whistles, but given the cost, complexity, and management overhead, I am very pleased with Meraki’s solution.

  • Before my installation, I was getting called 3-4 times a week to clean malware infections. Now I am getting called 3-4 times a year.
  • Employees are far more productive when they can't access their social media from their work computers.
  • Spam has been blocked and quarantined from hitting our users' inboxes, drastically reducing the time it takes to sort through daily email.
