Overall Satisfaction with Cisco Meraki MX

We use Cisco Meraki MX to gain visibility into end-user devices and ensure consistent network uptime. It allows us to centrally manage and troubleshoot the network from anywhere, which has greatly improved connectivity performance and response times across the organization and has saved us a great deal of efffort and time on multiple occasions.

Pros

  • Centralized cloud-based management from a single pane of glass.
  • Detailed visibility into devices, clients, and network usage as well as performance.
  • Reliable and simple remote access for end users (VPN).
  • Content filtering and threat protection all built-in.

Cons

  • It's a bit limited in advanced customization options, compared to our on-site WatchGuard Firebox, as well as other security appliance/firewall solutions.
  • Reporting and analytics could be more detailed and flexible, although this is a weak point for our primary firewall as well.
  • Licensing is a bit pricey, compared to other SMB options out there.
  • We've experiences reduced network downtime as the MX at our remote location has improved visibility and has enabled faster issue resolution, which in term has increased employee productivity.
  • ALthough the licensing costs are fairly high, compared to our other appliance, it has reduced the costs associated with on-site visits to the remote location due to the straightforward access and management of the MX.
  • The relatively high ongoing licensing costs have slightly reduced our overall IT budget flexibility (SMB), despite the obvious operational benefits. We've considered a Unifi appliance as a result.
The MX has greatly streamlined our netowrk operations thanks to the ease of deployment and management. The initial setup of our remote location took less than an hour and required virtually no on-site expertise.

Ongoing management is virtually "set and forget," and resolving issues when they do arise is handled quickly and straightforward through the dashboard, minimizing downtime and support-related costs.
We also use and access Meraki Systems Manager, through the Meraki Dashboard - accessing Systems Manager through the same dashboard provides a single pane of glass for management, making it effortless to switch between products. This integration has simplified administration and visibility, and there is no question that it has added operational value. Our previous MDM solution, while also cloud-based, required accessing through a different portal, naturally.
While we've only deployed an MX at one offsite location, we would still rate the MX a 10, as it allowed us to easily deploy the site with minimal effort, and the cloud-based management makes expanding the network straightforward. Deploying across multiple sites would likely be very effective in terms of scalability, especially for SMB organizations.
We previously evaluated WatchGuard Firebox Cloud, but we needed a solution that was a bit more straightforward to deploy and manage. The MX met that need for us. However licensing costs for both solutions are still a bit high.

Yes

Did Cisco Meraki MX live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Cisco Meraki MX go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Cisco Meraki MX again?

Yes

The Meraki MX lineup is well suited for organizations that need centralized management of multiple locations, as it allows for both quick deployment and simple/easy remote administration all from a single pane of glass.

It also works very well for providing VPN access for remote workers and helps monitor end-device uptime.

It does, however, fall a bit short in its firewall's customization, compared to traditional appliances (like our WatchGuard Firebox), so perhaps less suited for organizations that need more customization, as the Meraki MX lineup is primarily designed for simplicity and straightforward cloud-based management.
