Homebase
I loved using Homebase! The best feature, by far, is scheduling in shifts! It really could not be easier! For restaurants and bars it is the easiest and best software! Using the payroll feature can be very easy! The only downfall is trying to separate scheduled worked hours and overtime. The layout is simple and easy to navigate. The only real con I can think of is that lag.

Paycor is well suited for timekeeping and note taking within that realm. Paycor is less suited for EASE OF USE within the management team. for example: it is simple for an employee to clock in and out and make a note to add a day bonus or a perdium. It is much more cumbersome for me to approve that payroll on a monday by seeing which platform I can log in from to view my team and then select the employee from a list and select the arrows back to find the correct dates and then select approve, and check a box saying that I really DO APPROVE and then confirming that I meant to do that

Pros
Homebase
  • Homebase provides an easy way to schedule employees. Their scheduling platform is extremely user-friendly and easy to edit once the schedule is made.
  • Homebase makes it easy for employees to switch schedules on their own, a manager just simply has to approve rather than physically rescheduling both employees, this is great for any small retail business or restaurant with many hourly employees.
  • Homebase makes it easy to adjust hours that have been incorrectly clocked or clockouts that have been missed.

Cons
Homebase
  • Notifications could be more punctual
  • Employees should be able to pick up shifts outside of their scheduled times! Right now managers need to do it.
  • Importing hours on QBO payroll could use attention. Doesn't separate normal hours from overtime.

  • Manual onboarding needs help. Employees are defaulted to the wrong job class and I have to correct their job class after I have hired them.
  • Our default time zone should be the time zone of the employer, not Paycor's time zone.
  • Ability to run a report showing employee time zones.
  • Ability to run a report showing employee Policy Group.

Price point is the biggest driving factor. Paycor has made some strides in the customer service area and we've seen enough improvements that renewing our contract has become more a reality than a pipe dream. The system functions well and our employees are familiar with how it works, so to make a change would be a huge lift for our team

Paycor is really easy to use. It is simple and straightforward. They also provide a ton of training to equip you to be able to use their platform to the full extent. They also have customer service chatting with live agents and they have been helpful to point me in the right direction when I am stumped.

I feel like Paycor is always up and running! If they are planning downtime, they communicate it clearly. Every once in a while, I get something that says the system isn't working but it is usually back up within the hour. I typically find by the time that the employees complain about it, that it is resolved within the system.

For the most part, everything moves super fast. There are a few sections (Expense Management) that sometimes take a bit to load correctly. Or if they are interesting, it takes a minute to talk to each other! But reports are quickly downloaded and available! Even data heavy reports run fairly fast!

I feel like support will transfer you back and forth between departments and put you on hold forever. I believe it is very difficult to see the status of an open ticket. During my experience, it feels like the client has to push all communication and request updates from support regularly.

The online trainings are super helpful. They have user guides that you can read through, interactive training that will walk you through it as well as plain web based ones. I've actually never had an in-person training but all of the information you need can be found online. They also will do individual support training if you are struggling with a certain area.

Implementation of any new software is going to be challenging, especially if you are maintaining an existing program concurrently. When it is time for dual-processing (both old and new software) prior to going live, be prepared to be stressed. But trust the process and it will be over soon.

Alternatives Considered
Homebase
Homebase is simpler to use. Easier to navigate and is much cheaper than other alternatives! We had trouble when I worked as they were harder to reach our ROI. Deputy was too expensive and it was the reason we decided on Homebase! Employees also find it easy to use on their end!

All platforms provide similar services in our world. Some are just a bit better than others and offer different spins on things or nuances that make it just that much better for the end user. Paycor is that added nuance factor

I gave it a 10 because we only use it across one organization. However, it has allowed us to break it into multiple departments and layers of management. It is also easy for us to utilize across different locations but still under one master company. They have always provided us support when we decide to change something on an organizational level

Return on Investment
Homebase
  • Homebase has made the day to day management of employees easier, freeing up time for management to work on other things that help secure customer satisfaction.
  • It has also made payroll easier since it's implementation and allowed for fewer mistakes than the previous manual method, leading to less monetary mistakes and happier employees.
  • Homebase has made monitoring hours and overtime, as well as completion of internship and volunteer hours, much easier to monitor, leading to less confusion and more satisfied volunteers, interns, and payroll managers

  • It has freed me up to do more of the fun things we wanted to do in HR, outside of basic policy/evals/payroll.
  • It has challenged my brain and learning. It's both frustrating and empowering to be able to configure the system when Paycor can't.
