In my experience with using Javelo to complete my career evaluations, it generally performs adequately as long as I complete the full review in a single session. Once you're in the written question-and-answer portion of the review, the platform gives clear guidance and is easy to follow. However, if you exit the session partway through, it is difficult to find out what actions you have remaining. The dashboard language is ambiguous in this case, using terms like 'preparation' to refer to the written review (because it is in preparation for the in-person interview). Also 'finalization' means completing the written interview but there is another acknowledgment that needs to be completed after the in-person interview; it is only after this step that the full evaluation cycle is complete. Additionally, I have had the experience of my in-progress session not being saved although I took what I thought were the right steps to save my answers to return to later. After the first time this happened, I made sure to type everything in a separate document and just paste it into Javelo rather than risk having to start over again.

Weekdone is an incredible tool for helping teams see what their future plans are and the progress that has been made to get accomplish those plans. We use the platform for a way to track things we're working on during the quarter by breaking them down into weekly tasks. It is helpful that we can link each task to our quarterly objectives and set a due date. We can also tag colleagues in our plans and add comments and/or attachments for easy sharing throughout the organization.

Workboard is well suited in any organization IMO, it allows the individual business units to quickly set, define, organize and track their respective OKR's and align them with the larger business goals. The speed at which we're able to do this with Workboard has allowed us to spend more time on the goals themselves and less time on the management of the goal-setting exercise.

Pros
  • Once you are in the review portion of the platform, following the prompts is straightforward.
  • The dashboard shows clear indicators of whether you have an action remaining in the review process.

  • Creating plans, tracking progress, and logging potential problems on one page is very nice.
  • The company dashboard allows colleagues to stay up to date on quarterly progress.

  • Project management at higher level - includes tasks assignment, visual representations of the project status and deadlines
  • Increases the team members' sense of ownership - especially for people that are not used with or exposed to dedicated project management tools like Microsoft Project is.
  • User collaboration - which in turn reduces the communication via email
  • Increases the efficiency of the meetings - by quickly going through the action items and updating the task progress in the tool itself
  • Support has been outstanding so far

Cons
  • If you exit the review before completing all prompts, the answers will not always be saved. I have had this happen twice when I couldn't finish the questions in a single sitting and despite saving my session, I had to start from the beginning.
  • When returning to an in-progress session (assuming it is saved correctly), it is less clear at what stage in the review process you are, and what is remaining.
  • I have had difficulties with the language defaulting to French on my login page and in automated emails.

  • User setup and management and team/department creation is not a trivial effort. Requires some deliberate planning.
  • The deadlines for plans don't connect to the due dates for tasks in systems of record. That can get confusing when Asana says a task is due next week but Weekdone still has a due date of tomorrow.
  • I'd love to see more contextual support for sections like employee feedback. Maybe a sentence or two suggesting feedback based on the report's weekly entry. If a person had three Problems and only one Progress, Weekdone could suggest some corrective action to make it easier for the management to mitigate problems before they get ugly.

  • There's a bit of a ramp time to using the service.

Alternatives Considered
Javelo.io is the primary platform my company uses for reviews and interviews; the other products mentioned primarily serve as HR management and organization (such as PTO requests, employee handbooks & guidelines, salary calculator, org structure, and benefits enrollment). In that regard, Javelo.io offers a more social-focused approach to HR that is well-suited for performance reviews and interviews.

Weekdone started as a pilot within a single team so we didn't have a formal evaluation and selection process. When the pilot was over, we had developed a skill and affinity for the tool with no clear objections, so no other tools were considered. Our process for regular evaluation of incumbent technology at renewal time asks us to consider the cost to value ratio and user adoption/satisfaction. I don't anticipate there being any reason to consider alternatives, other than the long term viability of small software companies.

Workboard vs Microsoft Project(and its Server) is like comparing a regular sport car with Formula 1 cars. One is lighter, nicer, with a broader audience, it gets you there fast while the other one is dedicated, not as nice, especially built for it, not for everyone and it will get you there much faster.

  • Catching employee dissatisfaction before it grows and spreads.
  • Saved time from having to manually summarize accomplishments from project management systems.
  • Provided context into work planned vs work completed and added context to common blockers.
  • Provide visibility into progress over time (week / quarter / annual goals) and trendlines for individuals/teams/departments/organization.
  • The only negative is, some people grumble at adding yet another system to their workday.
