Considered Both Products
Mattermost
Chose Mattermost
Offordable and most preferred partner
Chose Mattermost
Mattermost stands out because of its flexibility, balance between controls and DevOps focus.

Teams is strong for enterprise office workflows and meetings but it can feel heavy and less efficient for fast paced technical collaboration and incident handling.
Chose Mattermost
We've tried other platforms and don't have the amount of people to make Jabber worth the expense. RocketChat was very hard to maintain in an air gapped environment because it required a container being built on the Internet connected domain and transferred over every time we …
Chose Mattermost
Mattermost is definitely the superior product compared with similar products we've used (3rdwave, 1ntegrate, etc.). We find it much easier to use and more secure for our processes. Definitely happy we switched to using Mattermost mainly.
Chose Mattermost
They're very similar. I think it's really a matter of preference. Again, one of the things I like about Mattermost is that it's strictly for business (atleast for us) it's different from the more mainstream messaging apps used so we can kind of separate work vs personal messages.
Chose Mattermost
Slack, Microsoft Teams and Discord
Chose Mattermost
It's cheaper and similar to Slack.
You can break down your project modules better here.
It's secure and self-hosted.
Chose Mattermost
Much more expensive than most chat applications but you have more control over things by self-hosting. Your security team will be able to design a very secure place to store all your code, passwords, and internal details, but most companies will not require this. It would be …
Chose Mattermost
In comparison to Slack, where Slack is strictly for internal communication, Mattermost actually has the format to display and not alter source code. Google chat is also even more limited in comparison to Slack and Mattermost. If you collaborate on code every single day, then …
Chose Mattermost
It is just as good if not better. Can be a superior option depending on the needs of your organization.
Chose Mattermost
These products all required cloud connectivity and licensing that was a significant cost. Mattermost allowed us to pilot this among just the Ops team and then evangelize this to the other infrastructure team. This allowed us to slowly show the value of this software and expand …
Chose Mattermost
Unlike Slack and Discord, Mattermost is self-hosted and focused on security. I used Discord before for community management and much simpler and less secure operations. Slack is great, but the fact that is cloud based takes out a lot of its independence.
Chose Mattermost
We used to have Mattermost and now we have Microsoft Teams. They are both very similar. Mattermost and Microsoft Teams are both great for communicating internally via calls, chats, meetings, etc. They are also both easy to set up an use. However, the Microsoft Teams mobile app …
Chose Mattermost
to reduce cost we shifted to Mattermost.
Chose Mattermost
Mattermost works better in that there aren’t constant updates and changes which can make finding past messages difficult. Mattermost also works better for channel creation and communication
Chose Mattermost
Slack is by far my personal favorite due to the age of the platform and the maturity of the features. Mattermost is a close 2nd-
Chose Mattermost
Honestly iv just used these two but when it comes to customization, they don't come close to Mattermost. Slack and Teams are Less flexible, Not self hosted. Not Open source, etc I will also say that i noticed integration capabilities are very limited with teams and slack and not …
Chose Mattermost
Mattermost is much faster and easier to use. It also has many more features beyond chat. They are more customizations and features for workflow and messaging on this platform also. The ability to integrate with other platforms via plugins, the security features, and the open …
Chose Mattermost
Mattermost is easier to use, faster, and less resource-intensive. Cross-platform support is great, and the mobile experience is awesome.
Chose Mattermost
I feel slack is a bit more difficult to use overall than Mattermost. Mattermost makes the tasks of communicating across departments and team members easier, as well as giving the ability to share information via hyper links, attachments, and other forms of communication among …
Chose Mattermost
We selected mattermost since we can control storage of our data. Slack is a great tool and offers more robust features compared to mattermost. However, the previously mentioned reason & the competitive pricing allowed us to stick with mattermost.
Chose Mattermost
key selling points for us was that its open source and can be self hosted.
Chose Mattermost
Mattermost is cheaper and offers the possibility of self-hosting compared to other competitors. This is a great advantage for our company.
Nextcloud
Chose Nextcloud
Nextcloud is actually a fork of ownCloud. We chose Nextcloud because of its much faster development.
Chose Nextcloud
Nextcloud was the only solution that would authenticate with Microsoft 365 while also running on all of their machines, handle absurdly high file number counts, and the occasional large file. We couldn't find other platforms that would do that at all, or that would say they …
Chose Nextcloud
PIM and file sharing are the same as you get in Google's Drive/Calendar. With extensions, you can also implement web meetings (e.g., by using Jitsi), but this comes with more administrative effort. In the end, this comes down to how big of a user/customer base you are …
Chose Nextcloud
CryptPad, OneDrive, PicoShare
CryptPad has end-to-end encryption client-side, a feature Nextcloud desperately needs, but much worse documentation, is much harder to setup, obviously slower due to the encryption, and has no clients for any device, it is browser only.
OneDrive is …
Chose Nextcloud
Main feature is the possibility to self host your files and have control over your data (especially if it is sensitive and you want to host the data in house). Others provide good services too, but thinking about GDPR this is the easiest route you can take. Since we use it for …
Chose Nextcloud
We prefer Nextcloud over Trello and Google Workspace as Nextcloud is considerable easier to use, access and manage. Tools like Trello and Google Workspace come with a powerhouse suite of products that are designed to work together. Nextcloud offers a solution that is just the …
Chose Nextcloud
On-premise solution good for control and cost (in our case).
Chose Nextcloud
I'm comparing, but it wasn't a problem for me, because I couldn't use it because of the security of the company that manages our Office 365. But, both allow practically the same options, they are fast, among others. Maybe Office 365 handles the Word, Excel, etc. files better, …
Chose Nextcloud
Dropbox was no longer an option due to their hosting policy. We needed an EU-based solution, preferably open source and self-hosted. There were also security leaks with Dropbox in the past. OneDrive is dreadfully slow, Nextcloud is as fast as you want it to be. On a dedicated …
Chose Nextcloud
Nextcloud is easy to set up an[d] easy to use because of its user-friendly interface. Some of the features offered by this application [are] much better and effective compared to OneDrive.
Overall, Nextcloud is just amazing and as an organization we are extremely happy with …
Chose Nextcloud
Nextcloud stacks up pretty well against Mattermost and ownCloud. I really appreciate the fact that Nextcloud seems to integrate with other products pretty seamlessly and allows for extensibility that our product team can extend and improve functionality without a tremendous …
Chose Nextcloud
As an offshoot (fork) of ownCloud, Nextcloud has a slightly better feature set and more integrations. Both products perform their core function of web-based file access admirably, but Nextcloud has gone above and beyond with the recent release of Hub in version 21. That it is …
Chose Nextcloud
Even excluding the budget and privacy concerns, we selected Nextcloud for its simplicity of use and the UI is very clear.
It just does what it is supposed to do.

Mattermost is definitely appropriate for a growing company with team members spread out across the u.s. and Canada. It’s given me the ability to have access to anyone with the information I need or the ability to develop friendships, working relationships with people I otherwise wouldn’t have access to

While searching for tools to satisfy a quickly scaling online startup, we found Nextcloud is well suited for today's remote collaborative team. Nextcloud has just the right toolset for a collaborative workspace including video, chat, many file formats accepted, and intuitive user interface. Comparatively other popular tools like Trello were distracting with more features than functionality. Working with Nextcloud is much like having a workspace with all your content and tools available anywhere on any device, without the ads, distractions, and irrelevant functionality. We will continue to utilize Nextcloud as a remote workspace for evolving and scaling teams.

Pros
  • Easy intergration to our main CRM (Monday.com)
  • I'm not techy myself but I have seen a lot of our previous integrations in Slack transferred over to Mattermost so that's fun
  • The desktop and phone app (android) works well enough. I haven't tried it on the Apple ecosystem yet.

  • File sharing (internal, public or federated).
  • One software, many activities (files, address book, calendar, chat, edit, email) ...
  • Groupware, sharing between users or groups is really easy and finely controlled.
  • Integrations and many apps.

Cons
  • Basic features like custom status, collapsed reply threads are JUST rolling out - kind of slow for a workplace chat app.
  • I don't really get the idea of Playbooks and Boards - there are better, dedicated tools for stuff like this and it's not so easy to turn off.

  • Slow in comparison to other solutions
  • May be complex for the start since there are lots of apps and features
  • May be not focusing on core topics

Mattermost works perfectly within our company as a way to communicate seamlessly. I have had no issues with the product and continue to use it often while on and off site. The mobile app allows me to continue to communicate with my team even when I don't have my laptop with me.

Usability
Since it helps track all the things at one place and the bots can be made which helps to automate many tasks. We use it in our security incident tracking in which there are pre defined tasks like adding people, creating groups, launching bots. All these things make the work easier and oraganized

It's easy to use and easy to maintain. It also provides many useful programs and plugins to make work even more productive; just check what's available and how you could use them to your advantage. Also, check the Nextcloud Files app on your phone, which makes everything available at the touch of your fingers.

Support Rating
We have not had to contact support for Mattermost ever. All that we have needed has been available in the documentation or website. One of our DevOps team members set it up in a couple of hours. The whole team was using Mattermost that same day. No support needed.

I never needed support as everything always worked fine. The documentation on Nextcloud website is extensive and clear. The community is very active on the forum and should support you if you don't already find what you are looking for.

PIM and file sharing are the same as you get in Google's Drive/Calendar. With extensions, you can also implement web meetings (e.g., by using Jitsi), but this comes with more administrative effort. In the end, this comes down to how big of a user/customer base you are supporting. For small enterprises, Nextcloud stacks up very well against its big competitors. At a large scale, you will have increased maintenance and resource costs which you need to check against licensing fees for the cloud providers.

Return on Investment
  • The platform is adaptive to storage data center outages in case our cloud storage provider goes away, Mattermost still works with our local database. However, files couldn't be shared. We can switch storage to local temporarily; that's a benefit. Later it all syncs up to main storage.
  • When our team switched to Mattermost from paid solutions, we had much savings and access to unlimited past messages and storage quota (we use our cloud storage provider)
  • We have better visibility of our tools and other products running adjacent to Mattermost due to integration capability. We use it for notifications/ updates sent from other products.

  • It allowed us access to our files from any device over the internet.
  • It helped manage and organize our file sharing with third parties.
  • It provided a secure wrapper for accessing files.
