OmniGraffle

Omnigraffle is great for documentation, mapping, flowcharting, and other technical diagramming scenarios. It's simple enough to bang out a quick illustration and powerful enough to build complex blueprints for complicated technical systems. If you need cross-platform compatibility, though, you're probably better off looking elsewhere. If you want complex integration with data sources (ala Visio's SQL Server integration for shape metadata), OmniGraffle also falls short — but those scenarios are few and far between in my experience.

Sketch

Sketch has worked really well for us in projects where our team is internal (so we all have Mac machines), where there is a no need for distance real-time collaboration, and for making designs very fast and intuitively (which is helpful when you’re working with a product that involves lots of feedback incorporation). Sketch has been a little difficult for us in scenarios where we’re working with contractors who do not have Sketch, and when we need to be able to collaborate with project team members remotely. In these cases, we tend to find workarounds.

Pros

OmniGraffle

  • OmniGraffle is fairly simple to use, but the one thing I think it does best is working with curved lines, particularly if you are using some of the available arc templates. Drop an arc onto your page, then tell it the dimensions it needs to be, and viola! Done. Manipulating the arcs is as simple as clicking and dragging offset points.
  • OmniGraffle has also done an excellent job in stirring up the creative minds of many people who create templates and tools to work with OmniGraffle (not that Microsoft hasn't done so either), and managed to get the bulk of those into well organized repositories.
  • What it all boils down to for me is: it just works. One doesn't need to have a computer science degree to work with it either. It is as simple or complex as you want it to be.

Sketch

  • The ability to create a custom symbol library and/or download available libraries for free or purchase make Sketch incredibly versatile and fast. Sketch eliminates the need for creating form fields and other UI elements by hand before using them in wireframe layouts. This saves so much time! The flexibility of symbols in Sketch allows for easily creating multiple width views of pages for responsive design.
  • Nesting symbols in sketch provide the ultimate flexibility in creating product UIs that have variations throughout a system. Nesting allows you to change aspects of a symbol on a per-instance need as opposed to forcing the creation of a unique symbol every time you need to display something a little different.
  • Multiple canvases on a page allow for creating multiple views of the same page based on conditional variables. Or for responsive design. There's no need to flip between pages in Sketch to do this. You can see multiple views as canvases in the same Sketch page. This helps greatly in keeping your Sketch files organized when you are dealing with a large system.
  • One of the key benefits to my work is Sketch's ability to work with 3rd party plug-ins and extensions. This allows me to immediately sync a single canvas or collection of canvases on a page with InVision, a tool my company uses to house all our UX documentation for feedback from stakeholders.

Cons

OmniGraffle

  • There could be more scaffolding to support new users in getting to know how to best use all of the many features and tools it provides.
  • There could be more support for printing. Many of our process flows extend beyond just one page, and OmniGraffle is rather finicky about printing multipage documents.
  • We could use this tool more effectively if there was the ability to have real-time team collaboration. Document handoffs can be a point of missed communication, so it’d be great if we could ever have the option of working together in the same place at the same time.

Sketch

  • When working in a team, everyone must be on the same version of the software, otherwise there are a lot of glitches happening to the files that have been saved under an older version.
  • Some users are transitioning into making print-ready designs from Sketch and using it as the sole creative tool. I would like to see better print ready features integrated into Sketch.

At the end of the day, it's just simple. This goes a long way in design and goes even further when your talking productivity, intuitive design and turnover rate. It's not difficult to figure something out even if it's not something your directly familiar with, i.e. if you want to export in certain file formats or change the size of the canvas, you don't have to delay your end product trying to figure it out. Similar situations took me less than 30 seconds to solve without a Google search. That's Usability.

OmniGraffle is an excellent application for chart and diagrams development. Been using it for a while now and it's a multiple platform application.

The support is relatively decent, and they are quick to respond. However, their releases are not great. Sketch could use more robust testing of their software before releases. Over the last four years, I have had many days lost while waiting for Sketch to patch issues with their releases. It's actually a running joke in our office. So, support, good. Releases in the first place? Not great.

Alternatives Considered

OmniGraffle

To sum up:
  • use Omnigraffle for diagraming or for quick wireframe drafting
  • use Sketch for more in-depth wireframing that you can then flesh out into a high fidelity mock-up, export assets for production, and integrate with prototyping tools like Proto.io and UXPin.

Sketch

Sketch is quite different from Adobe Photoshop. It's not built for photo editing, which is a good thing. It has just-enough in that area to get you by. Sketch is much more suited for creating websites as a design professional. The app is very fast, streamlined, and easy to use. I like the lightweight feel of Sketch as apposed to Photoshop—it doesn't have stuff I don't use.

Return on Investment

OmniGraffle

  • Instrumental in smoothly transitioning a 3rd party development team from designs to requirements.
  • Across cultures, US, Chinese, and Icelandic, OmniGraffle allowed our teams to speak the same language.
  • The depth of the software make some elements that are useful less accessible than they should be.

Sketch

  • It greatly reduced my time in learning new tasks.
  • Has significantly reduced my time in creating products based on a template that was created by one of our designers.
  • It was an additional software to purchase (as opposed to continuing use of Adobe illustrator--which I already had), but the purchase has ultimately been worth it.
