Oracle ESSO

Good if you want a temporary solution to too many passwords.

WatchGuard AuthPoint

WatchGuard Authpoint works well in a small or large organization as the user creation can be manually achieved or synced with AD. The platforms it can work with are pretty vast and they haven’t tried to reinvent the wheel. Things like radius and saml are utilized, which is clearly not trying to break away from what’s already available with most vendors. So more time is spent using the product rather than trying to work out how it will integrate with other systems.

Pros

Oracle ESSO

  • Flexible to work with most web sites and thick clients
  • Avoids users having to type their passwords repeatedly
  • Fairly performant

WatchGuard AuthPoint

  • It's a very simple to activate and use multi-factor solution. With the addition of the new hardware tokens, it is accessible to all companies.
  • Branding and management of the solution online sticks to the same WatchGuard experience and familiarity staff and clients know.
  • Add very simple ways to secure systems and give a great reporting function to keep an eye on what’s occurring across multiple systems.

Cons

Oracle ESSO

  • This tool is essentially a hack, making the user experience pretty weak. For example, we use it in an application which has a box to type your password. Every time you enter some data, ESSO steals the focus and types your password into the box, even if you aren't about to submit the form requiring the password.
  • This tool creates a 2nd CN in the directory and this broke some of our applications which were only expecting a single CN per user in the directory. Why can't it use a traditional database instead?
  • This tool caused performance issues with Putty. It would peg our CPUs at 100% if the user had Putty running. It took a very long time to resolve the issue.

WatchGuard AuthPoint

  • There have been some issues we've had with deployment, for instance, removing a PC from the domain then does not let you log in as a local user - this is more of an inconvenience considering this application should be removed prior to domain removal (lesson learned).
  • Have noticed some times the push requests are slow to come through and the timeout period needs to be adjusted to make sure you can log in - not huge impact.

In general, the support for WatchGuard AuthPoint has been very good. I've only had one subpar support case which involved setting up AuthPoint with SSL VPN as the technician wasn't able to explain clearly what he meant in regards to ports in use.

Alternatives Considered

Oracle ESSO

There's no substitute for properly developed applications that delegate authentication to an external system like Active Directory or a cloud identity provider. That way, the issues with screen scraping and constantly-breaking integration are solved permanently.

WatchGuard AuthPoint

Although some of the applications have overlapping features, none of the other management and or security solutions that we have used or evaluated are similar enough to AuthPoint to draw any meaningful comparisons.

Return on Investment

Oracle ESSO

  • We spent a lot of time implementing it on different applications. However, because it uses screen scraping, every time our apps upgraded, it broke the integration with ESSO, so we had to keep fixing the integration. After a few years, we have stopped integrating new apps with it due to this headache.

WatchGuard AuthPoint

  • Objective 1: Protect Office 365: ROI is negative -- spent too many hours troubleshooting issues and ended up removing from the client's O365 Tenant.
  • Objective 2: Protect Windows Logon -- ROI is good here. Easy setup and configuration. Functions as desired.
