Overall Satisfaction with WatchGuard AuthPoint

We use WatchGuard AuthPoint as the Multi-Factor Authentication method for connecting to FortiClient VPN so our end users can connect to our network remotely to access company resources securely.

This is used by all our end users with little to no technical expertise. I've found the set up for Authpoint to be very easy for the average person to follow, and though I've created 'guides' to walk people through the process, they typically do not need it as WatchGuard AuthPoint does an excellent job at walking people through the process alone.

Pros

  • Easy to setup
  • Quick to setup and use
  • Works consistently
  • Easy to reset token's when someone gets a new phone
  • Website is secure and requires MFA to sign on
  • App can enable MFA requirement to open and approve a push notification
  • App is easy to use

Cons

  • When adding a token, some people are confused by the 'token name'. A little blurb to say "This is just for your reference! You can make this the name of your company or the service that it provides MFA for" would be excellent.
  • I've had some people express confusion about the "red bar that keeps refilling and the 6-digit number that keeps changing". Some sort of statement to explain that would be great.
  • First-time use navigation - point out where the QR code scanning button is (I've managed to get a screenshot of the app to highlight it for our end users so they can find it easier).
  • We manage 207 users in AuthPoint with ease. It's more expensive than using our Microsoft Authenticator, but having our VPN MFA separate from our other MFAs is a good security practice. Extra features and ease of use justifies the cost.
  • The app is small (less than 20MB), so it's easy to convince people that have space on their device for it
  • Works on both Android and iPhones. App looks virtually the same which makes it easy for me to assist people with setup if needed.
WatchGuard AuthPoint has a nice quarantine feature which is helpful for users that aren't particularly technically secure. It also shows info about a user's device, such as whether their device has been jailbroken, what version of OS it's using, and if the user enabled push notifications.

We only use WatchGuard AuthPoint as an MFA for our VPN, but it's been very secure and hasn't shown any security issues. It automatically quarantines dangerous users, which is nice since I don't have to worry about doing it manually.
We previously used WatchGuard to manage our devices and push through Windows updates, and it did this very well. We recently started working with an MSP this year, so we're only using WatchGuard for its AuthPoint feature with our VPN. I do not have enough knowledge of our costs to articulate a TCO for others.
We do not use these features but I have looked into them in the past and I believe they would be worth the cost. We previously used WatchGuard's EPDR and it was great - ran quietly in the background and most people weren't even aware of it being present on their devices. Our MSP has since moved us over to a different service for this. We currently use a separate service for dark web monitoring and IT is the only department with the need for a password manager, which we use KeePass for since it's free. I think having all the features bundled together would make it easier to manage if our department was bigger (there's only 3 of us) and tasks more designated to specific people.
WatchGuard AuthPoint is easier to manage on a company-wide scale than Google Authenticator. We do use AuthPoint in conjunction with the Microsoft Authenticator but for different services. WatchGuard also has other features available, like dark web monitoring and device management, should we decide to move further services over to WatchGuard, with Google Authenticator does not have.

Do you think WatchGuard AuthPoint delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with WatchGuard AuthPoint's feature set?

Yes

Did WatchGuard AuthPoint live up to sales and marketing promises?

I wasn't involved with the selection/purchase process

Did implementation of WatchGuard AuthPoint go as expected?

I wasn't involved with the implementation phase

Would you buy WatchGuard AuthPoint again?

Yes

We use multiple authenticators at my company. We use WatchGuard AuthPoint just for our VPN for security purposes. The app works very well and over the past year we've only had a handful of issues with the authentication service, and these were resolved relatively quickly.

We do have to remind people to enable push notifications from the app, or have the app open when they need to use it to authenticate, otherwise they won't get the push to approve. The biggest issue I've found is that people will forget to do this and then say that the VPN isn't working - the VPN is working, it's just that they didn't get/approve the push from AuthPoint in time.
