Learn More About Component Content Management Systems

What are Component Content Management Systems?

Component Content Management Systems (CCMS) help control large amounts of content at a granular level. CCMS products include tools to track, edit, publish, and reuse words, paragraphs, tables, images, and other assets across documents and websites. CCMS does this by breaking up content into topics that can be searched, analyzed, modified, updated, and reimplemented along multiple channels. CCMS products also provide version control, exportation, and library management tools.

Because these systems allow users to group content topically, CCMS provide ways to efficiently edit, publish, manage, repeat, or otherwise control specific elements across large amounts of content. Additionally, since CCMS allows users to control repeat content, they allow users to improve content quality by managing all instances of that content simultaneously.

CCMS and Content Management Systems (CMS) products are often discussed simultaneously, but there is a distinct difference between these products. CMS products focus on content at a much broader level. For example, where CCMS will manage content at the word, paragraph, or image level, CMS products manage entire pages of contents. CMS products often lack the ability to control granular pieces of content across multiple locations - instead, each page, directory, or database is managed in its entirety.

Component Content Management Systems Comparison

When choosing the best Component Content Management Systems for you, consider the following:

Impact measurement tools. Some CCMS products include impact measurement and impression management features. This may include ways to measure how often content is accessed, length of time spent with content, number of unique impressions, and more. If you are using a CCMS to manage content distributed to an audience outside of your company, or if you need to track responsiveness to certain kinds of content, these inclusions may be helpful for you.

Publishing tools. How your content needs to be delivered will be an important consideration in choosing the best CCMS for you, especially if you have strict publishing format requirements or if you have a large mobile user base. Some CCMS offer the ability to publish content in a variety of programming languages (such as HTML5 or SCORM), or with publishing optimization for mobile devices. Be sure to consult vendors about your publishing needs to see how their products can meet them.

Content author experience. Your authors’ technical experience working with both management systems and large amounts of content will be an important factor in choosing the best CCMS. Some CCMS require higher levels of skill than others, as they include more specific authoring tools (such as metadata management). This will be especially important if your content becomes increasingly complex over time. Most CCMS come with some training or knowledge base features that can help authors become familiar with the product, but the length of time needed to acclimate to the product will still need to be considered.
