Overall Satisfaction with Autodesk Construction Cloud

The scope of my use was over multiple large scale (100K+ Sq. Ft.) projects. I works well at unifying the source of the most current information and submittals across a project.

Pros

  • Manage Folder Structures
  • Search Files/Documents
  • Hierarchy Folder Access Permissions
  • Maintain communication strings and meeting minutes.

Cons

  • Managing Data
  • The footprint large projects leave within Desktop Connector and Mitigating that data
  • REMOVE "add up to 80 projects" from the Desktop Connector Select Projects Screen! It is better to cycle the project data in/out for syncing latest greatest rather than have users load up their desktop connector full of projects and let data stagnate/have to be racked to update.
  • Not personally involved with ROI, Budgets or $ in any way.
It takes a second to get staff trained to a point of functional understanding. Desktop Connector is still causing errors with data syncing and mitigation, especially with large cloud collaborated models.
Its about the same as Procore or project wise, as far as overall functionality with the exception that it integrates better into native Autodesk products.

Using Autodesk Construction Cloud

1000 - Architects, Engineers, Trades People, PMs, PMAs
10 - Heavy experience/Educational Background in Computer Science and Revit Model Managment.
  • VDC
  • Blueprints
  • Coordination
  • We have to limit the amount of data we place in it to not crash end user's systems
  • Keeping the number of active projects on a machine limited.
  • More training than we thought was necessary
  • More template and folder development than originally anticipated.
  • Inability to delete items "permanently" for NDA and legal purposes.
  • Takes more time than it should
  • Meetings
  • Accountability Compliance and Liability
  • Deliverables
  • RFIs
I don't make these decisions and its what the company wants.

Evaluating Autodesk Construction Cloud and Competitors

  • Cloud Solutions
  • Scalability
  • Integration with Other Systems
  • Ease of Use
ACC works better with Revit
Be prepared for low productivity with learning curve and excessive data management.

Autodesk Construction Cloud Implementation

Be prepared for nothing to work originally, and support staff to fight change and be cumbersome at properly learning how to use in my opinion.
  • Implemented in-house
  • Third-party professional services
Both CTC and Autodesk
Change management was a major issue with the implementation - From my experience, people do not like changing anything, let alone major day-to-day workflows
  • Improper Staff Use/storage
  • Crashing and Data out-of-sync
  • Folks doing what Autodesk recommends and "Add[ing] up to 80" projects to Desktop connector and then subsequently crashing systems and projects.
  • Lack of Microsoft Integration

Autodesk Construction Cloud Training

  • Online Training
  • In-Person Training
Great to have hands on folks to answer questions. Live training worked better for real time scenarios.
Good as any other online content, not incredible. There was a cost associated with this training

Configuring Autodesk Construction Cloud

Too limited, it just doesn't work as its sold to integrate with major platform like windows, office, Desktop Connector. Too many concise steps to maintain accurate data and sharing.
Less is more. The more you through at it as far as data and details, the less likely it is able to sync and function fully. Staff training is extremely important to make sure team members are not losing information or overriding each other's work. "Why do we have to do it that way?? i've been able to double click an icon for 25+ years etc. etc. )
Some - we have done small customizations to the interface
Some - we have added small pieces of custom code - Less is more. THe more we modified, the more we had to trouble shoot
Completely Ignore "Add up to 80 projects" in Desktop Connector in order to prevent crashes and errors. We tell folks to "Add up to 4 projects MAXIMUM"

Autodesk Construction Cloud Support

Autodesk staff intervention often required to support IT when normal installs and direction was erroneous.
ProsCons
Knowledgeable team
Support cares about my success
Poor followup
Not kept informed
Escalation required
Difficult to get immediate help
Need to explain problems multiple times
Me personally - no
Yes - No, it required several updates and releases and is still ongoing.
Weekly meetings for staff trainings and issues updates.

Using Autodesk Construction Cloud

ProsCons
Feel confident using
Unnecessarily complex
Difficult to use
Requires technical support
Not well integrated
Inconsistent
Slow to learn
Cumbersome
Lots to learn
  • Docs
  • Permissions
  • Project Folders
  • Data Management, uploading downloading vs Desktop Connector
  • How to properly open, modify, save and share ACC Content
  • Bugs with windows and office
  • Bugs with large project footprints, model sizes, folder structures
  • Learning Curve and staff understanding
Yes - Great/about the same as the rest of ACC when you have a cell network/data, horrible in the field with limited connectivity.

Autodesk Construction Cloud Reliability

Not applicable/harder to implement across larger workforces or large-scale projects.
5 major outages in the last year, some on days of major deliverables or deadlines... dependent upon AWS....
The data mitigation is complete garbage. Any cloud collaborated model takes 2x to load in the Autodesk Construction Cloud environment that if it was saved locally or to on prem servers. We had our systems and bandwidth all evaluated to be applicable but the data downloads and sequencing through Desktop Connector leaves much to be desired.

Integrating Autodesk Construction Cloud

Microsoft products do not save or hierarchy changes properly. We have folks overriding each others work as there are specific workflows to follow to lock files and maintain versions (all very overcomplicated). We are designers and architects, not computer scientists.
  • File import/export
  • Single Signon
  • API (e.g. SOAP or REST)
  • Javascript widgets
  • AppExchange or similar marketplace
Its not going to work as easily as Autodesk sells it to you, and if you are a large firm count on your company being the Beta tester for the releases (not Autodesk) We found their errors and mistakes with release before Autodesk did all. the. time from our experience

Relationship with Autodesk

N/A Autodesk was our vendor, not a 3rd party. They were attentive but still relied on feedback from our field use of the software for de0bugging, as opposed to releasing versions that were already beta tested and error free. The software version would work until they were in a large user environment.
Not applicable, Autodesk was our vendor. Autodesk was attentive, but still relied on our company to truly beta test their releases.
They were attentive and thorough when their software releases caused errors.
Not applicable, Autodesk was our vendor
Required yearly upgrades and contracts a opposed to one-time purchases.
Autodesk was our vendor. Get a weekly support meeting set up with someone on their account.

Upgrading Autodesk Construction Cloud

Yes - No. We had errors and crashes companywide do to improper .ini and installers. we had to have a new released version to properly install.
  • Not being on a non-supported version.
Yes - We went to paid to get support when the installers and staff usage did not work as we were told.
