Overall Satisfaction with Catchpoint
Catchpoint is one of our key observability tool as it provides great insights from the performance and availability perspective of an application. This helped us fine-tune and enhance our end-user experience to a great extent. In our organisation, we have been using the tool to create multiple kinds of monitors like web, transaction, SSL and API. Each of these monitors are extremely insightful and have helped us to understand our applications and dig deep into the flaws. It provides an excellent Dashboard feature that comes very handy to the business and product owners who at any given point of time are now able to glance through their app performance, response time, availability and similar metrics. We are able to proactively triage the app issues, before the users are aware of it. For me, It has been a great experience using Catchpoint and I would recommend it to my peers.
Pros
- Catchpoint Synthetics: We create our synthetic monitoring using catchpoint. Creating the synthetics monitors are easy and requires basic knowledge on selenium and javascript. It allows you to run the test from external(backbone) and internal enterprise nodes. The screenshot and filmstrip feature is an add-on along with various customisations. Once created, It provides a detailed insight of each request that is involved in the application flow which helps us in addressing the issue at the request level.
- Catchpoint API Test: This is another kind of test which we have explored in our organisation. This has helped us to maintain the health check of our APIs and also we have utilised it for a variety of our use cases.
- Catchpoint Dashboard: This is our one-stop shop for all our monitors. It has multiple widgets that displays various application performance metrics. We use this feature immensely and it is of great value to the business.
- Catchpoint UI: It is very user friendly and with basic introduction anyone can just get started with it.
Cons
- Missing Functionality: For our organisation, we use multiple observability tools and what we miss in Catchpoint is its ability to display a list of muted monitors in the dashboard. This was a business requirement for our company where the business wanted to know at any given point of time, a list of monitors that were muted during an outage or a scheduled maintenance. This feature was unavailable in Catchpoint, however, we hope to see some enhancements in the future.
- With the help of Catchpoint, we are able to address issue before our customers so our triage time has reduced.
- We are able to reduce outages and unwanted user incidents.
- We are able to get to the root cause of the issue efficiently post implementing catchpoint monitoring.
There were just few access requests that were required and then a basic understanding of the tool which would suffice for anyone to get started with Catchpoint. Their knowledge articles are too detailed and will have answers to everything that you might need. Post login in to the portal, setting up the monitors would require some understanding of selenium or javascript specially for the transaction and API monitors. The web and SSL monitors are however quick and easy. I personally could see immediate results of our app performance and I felt that interpreting the data was much easier as compared to other tools.
I feel Catchpoint's synthetic monitoring stacks up against them all and I personally feel more comfortable in creating our observability in Catchpoint. They have a detailed documentation for each keyword you come across in their portal that really helps a lot. And ofcourse, the customer support is always there to guide you through.
