Overall Satisfaction with Cisco Umbrella
We use Cisco Umbrella for all our staff. We are a small company and generally work from home so our laptops are not centrally managed. Having Cisco Umbrella filter our DNS requests help to protect all of us to ensure that anything that gets onto our machines cannot get back out to the less acceptable corners of the internet without prior approval.
- Automatically blocks requests to known bad domains and IPs
- Provides great insights into what traffic occurs on our laptops
- When I change policy I am not sure how to instantly get a client to refresh its cache, which can mean a delay of 15 minutes or so to granting exceptions.
- Provides a security layer for remote computers
Cisco Umbrella is working well for endpoints outside the corporate network as that is our main use case. You need to set up the Umbrella client, either as a module in Cisco AnyConnect or as a separate Umbrella client software, and that automatically enables the DNS filtering service. The one downside is that unless you have other controls in place then users can disable that software from running and hence bypass the protection.
Some of us are using the Cisco Umbrella plugin for Cisco AnyConnect as we already had the Cisco AnyConnect client installed. It works perfectly well that way and means one less application to have running. We have not integrated Umbrella with any other systems.
