Overall Satisfaction with Microsoft Power BI

Microsoft Power BI is used to create dashboards and visual management systems for several groups within my organization. It is simple to use and can create powerful visualizations. It falls short, however, when used as an automated reporting tool. Users can subscribe to a report/dashboard, but if the report is modified, the subscription breaks with no notification to the subscriber. This led to a lot of confusion by users not understanding why they were no longer receiving reports.

Pros

  • Visualizations
  • Pivot Tables

Cons

  • Subscribing to reports
  • Easier access to underlying data
  • Our quality dashboard has increased broad awareness, improved accountability, and accelerated time to resolution of quality issues.
In general, Microsoft Power BI has a low barrier to entry, but designing and programming in its environment is a special learned skill that is outside of normal SW engineering training and experience. We have run issues when people leave the organization and others try to pick up where the original designer left off.

Do you think Microsoft Power BI delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Microsoft Power BI's feature set?

Yes

Did Microsoft Power BI live up to sales and marketing promises?

I wasn't involved with the selection/purchase process

Did implementation of Microsoft Power BI go as expected?

I wasn't involved with the implementation phase

Would you buy Microsoft Power BI again?

Yes

Microsoft Power BI is well suited to communicating data in a visual manner. It is not, however, very well suited to creating a reporting tool that users can subscribe to in order to get automated periodic communications.
