Overall Satisfaction with Microsoft Visual Studio Code

We use Microsoft Visual Studio Code mainly to develop in Java and Apache Camel. Very recently we have added GitHub Copilot extension and we are very satisfied in the way it is embedded and the many situations where it help us by asking questions and getting very precise answers (issue troubleshooting) and by getting proposals in terms of lines of code.

Pros

  • Text formatting
  • Wide number of extensions
  • Quick to launch
  • Efficient consuming PC resources

Cons

  • Frankly speaking, trying to come up with some improvements I struggle to find something for my daily use. Perhaps, documentation is not pretty clear when configuring file settings.json, you need to dig a bit on the internet to find the solution
  • In our business it has helped developing internal applications that are used for daily operations. It is seeing as an enabler.
  • It also help us troubleshooting if any bug appears that may block our users. So it is also seeing as a tool for solving issues.
  • Thanks to the user experience and easy use, it also reduce the time to market. Whenever you need a new extension it easy to add it and start using it.
Microsoft Visual Studio Code for me is the perfect example of usability. It is useful for many different programming languages like Java, Javascript, C, C#. And it provides many different extensions to help you with all programming languages. Microsoft Visual Studio Code is made in a way that is very generic and can adapt to different languages. In my team, there are members using it for Database, others for frontend and my case for backend.
The other IDE that I use is Eclipse. Comparing both, Microsoft Visual Studio Code it clearly wins in resource consuming. I can have open many instances of Microsoft Visual Studio Code and the memory ram usage it doesn't go very high. Another point where I prefer Microsoft Visual Studio Code is in the use of extensions, for example GitHub Copilot where it is better embedded in Microsoft Visual Studio Code than in Eclipse.

Microsoft Visual Studio Code is perfectly well suited if you want to code in Java. It is well supported and provides lots of Java extensions (extension pack for java, debugger for java, maven for java...). Apart from coding, it helps you debugging and you can run your program in a embedded server.
