Overall Satisfaction with New Relic

The interface is well rounded and nice to use. However for some parameters and configurations you need to have some experience with the tool to know what you're doing. Some configurations are not clear on how they work and require research on alternative platforms, like videos or blog posts, to be used correctly.
We work with a different e-commerce clients and we need a way to monitor their servers, checking resource usage and service status, to be able to be proactive and solve any issue that may happen on production and development environments. New Relic allows us to configure very precise alerts and monitoring features, and offers lots of ways to deliver those alerts and updates.

Pros

  • AWS resource monitoring
  • Flexibility in types and parameters of alerts
  • Integration with messaging platforms

Cons

  • Monitoring based on customer data
  • Custom services monitoring
  • Reduced the time needed to manually monitor servers
  • Reduced downtime for our clients as we know sooner about issues
  • Reduced devops work hours by giving us a better view of our resources
Before start using New Relic, we had a custom Grafana monitoring tool configured for our clients. Altough functional, it took too much time to add new alerts and monitoring features. New Relic is way easier and simpler to to configure and saves us a lot of time spent not only on configuration, but also keeping the service working.

Did New Relic live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of New Relic go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy New Relic again?

Yes

New Relic its an excellent tool for monitoring services used on the SAAS universe, like web servers, relational and nosql dbms, reverse proxies, text databases, etc. Its also a powerful tool to monitor resource usage on said servers.
However, its not well fitted to monitor custom services - if you need to generate alerts based on logs or database information, for example.
