Overall Satisfaction with Nutanix AOS

In our company, we use Nutanix our main data center platform. We deliver our customers services from this platform, they can rent a whole IaaS environment, but also per VM if they want to. Nutanix AOS is our main infrastructure platform and therefore it is used by everybody in our company. It makes our company very flexible in delivering virtual infrastructure to our customers.

Pros

  • Availability.
  • Scalability.
  • Managability.
  • Hyper-converged infrastructure.
  • Ease of deployment.

Cons

  • Easier migration from Hyper-V to AHV.
  • We can solve daily errors easier.
  • MSP program for providers.
  • Less downtime.
  • Easy to expand.
  • Easy to mange, need less people to manage datacenter platform.
Nutanix support is something they score very high on. Nutanix support always takes the lead and ownership of problems and make the extra effort to solve it for their customers. Feedback is always good, only thing you need to make sure you have an active support contract on all your units. For hardware and for software!

We were looking for a data center platform that gave us the ability to easily expand, manage, and use IT infrastrutcture. After running into multiple issues with iSCSI storage systems we wanted to have more flexibility and less fault sensitive systems. Mostly Nutanix is in our data center because of their proven uptime and self-repairing service.
Nutanix has a good community which is very helpful in setting up your system. Also you can download the Nutanix CE (Community Edition) to test it yourself and play with it. Nutanix CE is also helpful preparing to get your NCP/NCAP certification. Also if your a partner, you get access to the Nutanix University and follow all sorts of training on Nutanix. Here you will also have updated product sheets and many other new feature enhancements.
Because of the hyper-converged infrastructure model, you will take advantage of SSD storage when needed (In hybrid configs). VMs not frequently accessed will be put on HDD SATA storage and will also be available. Nutanix looks at workloads to decide what VMs should be accessible via SSD and which via HDD. If you have an all-flash system then everything is loaded from these of course and we have seen on most migrations only this is already boosting performance for applications and VDI environments.
We wanted to have a trustful and stable datacenter platform also not bound to a hardware vendor. This could be done with Hyper-V and storage spaces direct but this would also be expensive and you would miss out on management tooling.
VMWare vCenter we looked at pricing, but our staff has no experience with this, so that was a no go also.
The Lenovo ThinkAgile CP (Cloud Platform) Series is a comparable system, but would leave us with vendor lock-in, what we didn't want in the first place!
So we have Nutanix as DataCenter Platform software solution and the freedom to choose between several hardware vendors (Lenovo, HP, Dell, Supermicro)
Nutanix works very well for delivering data center services to customers, as it is easy to deploy (simple cluster within 1 hour) and easy to manage.
When running Nutanix you can also add several other services like Nutanix Files (distributed file system), ERA (Database service) and Nutanix Frame (VDI infrastructure to provide even more services to customers.
It's less appropriate to run Nutanix in an environment with a low VM count because it's super scalable for bigger environments.
