Overall Satisfaction with PRTG Network Monitor

We use PRTG Network Monitor to monitor traffic flow on bandwidth, up-time on devices, and custom SNMP sensors. We use it on everything from core level switches down to individual customer connections. Often used in times of troubleshooting to be able to show customers and clients when connections have gone down, how long they have been down, or if there is any active traffic on the connection at the time on inquiry.

Pros

  • Real-Time monitoring (30 second averages)
  • Map view (lay out your devices via geo-locations)
  • Historical data on connections / devices
  • Flexibility to add devices that support SNMP output

Cons

  • While detailed, the views of sensors could be a little less clunky
  • Quicker averages (5 seconds or less) for a true 'real-time' view would be ideal
  • A better mobile interface would be good. Often just use the desktop version, even on a mobile device.
  • Faster turn around for down connections / services
  • Helps to be more proactive when looking at your connections / services
  • Does a fantastic job of alerting you when things go down / stop functions as intended
  • Historical data is extremely valuable in looking at long term value

Do you think PRTG Network Monitor delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with PRTG Network Monitor's feature set?

Yes

Did PRTG Network Monitor live up to sales and marketing promises?

I wasn't involved with the selection/purchase process

Did implementation of PRTG Network Monitor go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy PRTG Network Monitor again?

Yes

We probably use it in less capacity than most people would. For us, we use it mostly to monitor connections and look at historical data. PRTG Network Monitor has a TON of options inside each sensor and at times it can almost be overload when you're trying to tweak the details of each one. If someone is looking for a true 'real-time' monitoring device, just be advised that it functions best on 30 second averages. Can go lower, but we have found 30 to be the ideal spot for the way it performs.
