Overall Satisfaction with QuickBooks Online
Starting a solopreneur business, I was suddenly responsible for the Financial side of the business, which a) I'd never had to be responsible for in corporate jobs with a Finance team, and b) I really don't enjoy or understand well. Through an accountant friend, I was recommended QuickBooks Online - as it handles all the essential Finance functions - payroll, invoicing, expenses, GST and taxes in one place. It's been a godsend.
Pros
- The interface is incredibly intuitive for 'non-finance' people. It uses finance language, but explains it or has hover-over help to give you peace of mind and explain finance jargon.
- It integrates seamlessly with my bank and my accountant, and the ATO, so I have to do less admin sharing docs between parties.
- The mobile app makes it easy to snap receipts and keep track of expenses - no more wads of receipts waiting to be scanned.
Cons
- The "forward to QB" feature - which allows you to forward emailed or online receipts to a custom email address to load to your account is a bit hit-and-miss. It handles some receipts and invoices well, but others - which you would expect it handles a lot, like Telstra bills - it seems to really struggle to glean the right info from.
- Still on the 'email forward' feature, it doesn't work if you also need to cc another recipient (eg my book-keeper to explain what to code the receipt to) - those receipts just disappear into a black hole. Now I have to forward it twice/separately which is a bit annoying.
- QuickBooks Online allows me not to have to think too much, or commit too much time, to finance admin. Invoices take a couple of minutes, expenses are easy to enter, and quarterly and annual reporting/taxes are easily handled.
- I've become more financially literate because QuickBooks Online uses financial language, but explains it well for lay-people.
I have to use SAP for billing with some clients, and I think Ariba is much less intuitive, and the interface/GUI is much less modern and appealing. The fact that the client needs to send a PDF "user guide" says a lot to me about how counter-intuitive a lot of the features in Ariba are.
