Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Rubrik as the primary backup solution for our whole organisation. It addresses our DR strategy solutions and backup solutions. Overall, it has so far worked great as a way to address these with the ability to backup to cloud.

Alternatives Considered

PowerProtect DD (formerly Dell EMC Data Domain) and Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery

Faster backup, higher deduplication rates, quicker development and much quicker support. UI miles better than either contender and easy to use for superusers of backup and restore. Backup and DR should be simple and easy to use and not convoluted and error riddled.

Ransomware

Rubrik has an extra service called Radar which uses ML to index backups and track over time larger changes in file structures. This can detect file locks or large file deletions and will alert the infrastructure team to the issue. Their backups are also immutable (aren't 90% of them anyway) and there is the possibility for air gapping and cloud archiving.

Microsoft 365

We do not use 365, mailbox, SharePoint or OneDrive backup.

Zero Trust

Latest appliance update gives super granular permissions to an organisation's custom made role, this allows one user to be completely locked down to only be able to view a single backup status or all the way up to being an administrator that can manage everything.

Likelihood to Recommend

Best used in a slightly more modern infrastructure, some teething issues with our older systems and databases where the backup technology wasn't as easy to use/implement as promised during demonstrations; however, all around a great product which replaced a similarly rated product we had for 5 years previous.
Does what it says on the tin so far, still plenty of features yet to test out.
