Overall Satisfaction with ShadowProtect SPX
We are an MSP with 385 licenses of Shadowprotect rolled out currently. About half of these licenses are SPX. We back up locally to a server that gives us local DR capabilities, and then we replicate to either our cloud or to StorageCraft's cloud.
Pros
- Shadowprotect has a relatively simple interface so it's easy to set up.
- Due to the simple UI, it is easy to restore files.
- Imagemanage works fairly well once it's set up and doesn't need much babysitting.
Cons
- Storagecraft SPX is a step backwards in terms of functionality. Restores are definitely slower.
- It is hard for us to have visibility into errors int he new version of SPX. We prefer the previous version.
- SPX is not really supported by Connectwise Automate so we are unable to centrally monitor backups anymore with the product.
- We often have jobs that start and never finish, so an alert is never created. We have to do a weekly manual check of every backuped up server in order to ensure it's working
- Storagecraft has come back and is now doubling our price for what we consider an inferior product to the previous version prior to SPX.
- We have been with Shadowprotect for 5 years and are now only moving off of them due to limited functionality and Shadowprotect doubling our billing.
- The product now requires a lot more babysitting so I have one person just stuck managing backups, which is not a fulfilling job and hard to keep someone in that seat.
- While Shadowprotect has been fantastic for years, it is time for us to move on to something that makes financial sense and requires less labour.
- Storagecraft Cloud is fairly expensive compared to competitors.
We have servers dedicated to backups at our client sites so doing a wholesale hardware replacement is really tough. We also have our own cloud that is fairly young, so we don't want to move to a product that forces us into their cloud. We want to use both our cloud and grow into the vendors cloud as it makes sense.
Both Veeam and Unitrends are very strong and we have chosen to switch to Unitrends. Veeam is ok but a bit tough to get into, and they don't have their own cloud so you have to source your own. In some ways, it is a bit clunky.
Unitrends has their own cloud here in Canada and we have an option to use our hardware or their appliances; our cloud or theirs and it fits what we need
