Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Sigma is used to easily browse through large volumes of data and quickly pull out key information. It can show data in different visualization formats, which aids us in providing insight into the data to other parts of the business. The main business issue is the speed of loading data which is not a problem with sigma.

Self-Service Analytics

Easier for more people to analyze data. It is a similar format to Excel, which most regular business users are used to, making it easier to learn compared to Tableau. No impact on my business decisions as of yet.

Ad Hoc Analytics

Ad hot analysis is good. Automated is not that good. Scheduled excel reporting is still not a feature. PDF reporting for us is not helpful most of the time.

Alternatives Considered

Tableau Desktop, Microsoft Excel, Snowflake and Microsoft SQL Server

Sigma is easier to learn than Tableau. Has many features similar to excel. The custom SQL is obviously similar to Snowflake and SQL querying, but dynamic querying is not possible in sigma. In the Tableau, dynamic date parameters are possible to add in the custom SQL.

I have used Sigma to query and show high-level stats of financial data. I am currently creating reports in sigma that I can automate to send a pdf. It is a fast tool and easy to use for most use cases. Some use cases it is not good for is scheduling excel reports from your dashboard as this is not a function yet. If you need to do more backend data work, then the custom SQL is not great as there is no dynamic parameter for the date possible and most of my use cases require parameter control for the user to have more control over what they see.
