Overall Satisfaction with Slack

Slack is used for inter-departmental communication. We have channels for teams, projects, initiatives, and more. We can find every employee in the company on the app and most use it on a daily basis. We're a remote company (most of us) and it really helps facilitate communication as if we were all in the same office.
  • It expedites internal customer service among busy departments, aiding us to give our candidates the best experience.
  • The channel feature is awesome because we have so many little projects and to have a channel where you can communicate solely with the necessary parties is just great.
  • I like the variety of emoticons as well because they can be so expressive where words might be too strong.
  • There are a lot of applications that work in tandem with Slack and I've found them a little hard to maneuver. I wish they were easier to use or there was a little more guidance.
  • The status feature is almost lost amongst everything else that goes on in Slack. There are times when you are really busy and won't be able to respond immediately or times when you are on a trip, etc. Having the desktop and mobile features active sometimes confuse the audience and I wish it was easier or if there was a more dynamic status function and maybe there is and I've just yet to discover it.
  • I had an issue recently where I couldn't change the name of a channel, but I had to delete it and create a new one. Too much work.
  • It has a very good and large impact on putting a face and a voice to "strangers" in our remote environment.
  • It has saved time and money chasing down some colleagues, waiting on email responses and often replacing actual conferencing software when they give problems.
  • Its impact on team building and development has been tremendous because we can keep an eye on status, check in on sick colleagues, or just drop in to say hello.
We used Spark Instant Messenger before and Slack blew them out the water with a wealth of features we hadn't used before. We didn't need to be on the VPN to communicate and we could do video calls and make our own groups. Everything was better with Slack, as it kind of merges many different programs into one and has the ability to work with additional applications, though I haven't explored that end much.

Did implementation of Slack go as expected?

I wasn't involved with the implementation phase

Well suited
  • It's great to make up for the in-person communication if you work remotely.
  • It's perfect when we have specific groups that don't require the whole team.
  • It's also perfect for managing interdepartmental communication between busy departments.

Less Appropriate
  • I've also used Slack in non-business settings for a professional group and found it wasn't as useful.
