Overall Satisfaction with Unitrends
It is currently being used as the main backup solution. All our physical and virtual servers and applications are being backed up using Unitrends. It addresses our need for tapeless backup and having to manage both the software and hardware aspect of the backup product. It is used for short term back and restore as well as a long term, archival solution.
- It recognizes the type of server based on client discovery tool, and installs the appropriate client software. All the scheduling and options are specific to the type, which makes the configuration a breeze.
- The interface is very intuitive. Doesn't need much training to start using the software. It does require some planning for scheduling.
- Due to its seamless integration between its software and hardware, the appliance is fast and stable.
- Sometimes the clients will hang and eat up valuable resources on the client. So it will need close monitoring.
- The backup scheduling and options aren't very intuitive so it takes some time to understand them and plan accordingly.
- The support is hit or miss. Easy resolutions will prompt immediate response, but more complicated resolutions can take a long time and require more persistence from the user.
- It helped us eliminate several backup products so it had a positive impact on our annual cost in the last 5 years.
- The cloud replication has been problematic, so the ROI on that portion has been negative so far.
- We have used it to recover from some major incidents (entire file server and SQL database recovery) so ROI on it is significant if we translate the potential lost productivity into dollars.
Unitrends is all-in-one solution so managing one appliance was much easier than having to manage both software and hardware. Datto worked well but the solution was not big enough for our company size (500-1000 employees). unitrend addressed all our needs in terms of having multiple types of servers and applications. Also unitrends did not require additional licensing for each of the clients. The licensing was simple and cost effective over the other products.
