Overall Satisfaction with WordPress
WordPress was used by 3 very high-volume news websites acquired by my previous company. It was used to quickly build a cheap, high-functioning suite of sites to collect data and email addresses and serve ads. I would definitely use it again despite the vitriol it gets from the development community.
- Cheap.
- Fast, largely because of prebuilt solutions.
- A lot developers with prior experience.
- Custom development can be a pain if things get complicated, especially with everything using a global state.
- Often developers are more accustomed to site-building and not custom development, so you can inherit a sloppy site possibly with poor performance.
- It may be more difficult to scale custom code if the site has extremely high usage, particularly because there are so few tables used.
WordPress is WAY easier to get into than Drupal. Despite a lot of initial complaints about their editor, Gutenberg, I loved it. The auto-updates can actually work, unlike Drupal that often have more issues probably because Drupal requires a lot more custom work and it's better at that type of job. There are SO many plugins, you can accomplish almost anything in WordPress that you can do in another CMS and it is easier to find a developer that has experience with it. As a current NodeJS developer, I really think it has a great role in web development and receives way too many negative reviews from developers. It's half an IT software rather than a web framework and that is OK, and often times it's even better.
