Overall Satisfaction with WordPress
For the first four years of my freelancing career, I built custom WordPress websites for small business clients. The highly-flexible platform allowed me to customize both the front and back end of my clients' websites to meet their exact specifications. When they needed new functionality, it was often as simple as installing a free plugin.
Pros
- massive library of free and paid plugins
- ability to build absolutely anything
- thriving community for support and troubleshooting
Cons
- plugins often cause breaking problems with websites
- codebase is a mess
- plugins make sites vulnerable to attack
- made it easy to get started as a freelance web developer
- became a maintenance nightmare (plugins, technical debt, etc)
- platform is slow to change and held back development goals
For most small businesses, Squarespace is a better option. It provides all of the basic and intermediate functionality a business owner could want (e-commerce, forms, media, blog, etc) without the plugin and hacking nightmares of WordPress. It's also easier for clients to manage on their own—with a visual interface, instead of clunky backend forms.
